I have no idea how you isolate tracks like that and work with them, but I've wondered for years if there was a way to do that and like make the guitar tracks sound louder on the This Means War album. So they would be more like they are on On Fire. Or is that something that can only be done by having the individual studio tracks.

It can only be done "right" with the original multitrack. But I know there are remastering techniques to get close to it.

I totally agree with the guitar on TMW - honestly, while I love the songs, I don't see how that album got billed as the first "real rock" album of the Schlitt-era. IMHO it wasn't much rockier than BTTS - lots of keyboards, with the guitar often barely discernable (except for the solos). I guess the drums were better.

Sounds like a cool project to what technologies can be used to extract parts of songs and make our own remixes, Brent has some good tools. Beefing the guitars on some songs would be great.

Doesn't sound like a very legal project though. I didn't post the whole song to not break the copyright laws TOO much...

Oh yeah it would be totally illegal, most of youtube content is remixes n stuff that are ripped material.

You could only be sued if (a) there is a proven loss to the owner (b) you are trying to hurt the record label on purpose. So at the end of the day it's a moral choice to play with songs.

Now how did I make these? In the recording software I use (Reaper) there is an effect called ReaFir. Among other things, it can record a frequency curve and then subtract this curve from the sound. The purpose of this is to remove noise from recordings, but I just used it to remove drums instead. For this to work you need the thing you want to remove to play by itself somewhere in the song to be able to record its frequency curve. So these two songs starting with drums was perfect for this experiment.

I also time stretched the drums to fit in the other song...

Well heck, I'd be happy just to hear some partial song samples of how it could sound if they did remix TMW that way.

I think Back to the street is much rockier than This means war. More and louder guitars and the drums sounds more real. I think they probably are real on back to the street.
