1979 Petra Live Audio Miscellaneous

Post by pmal » Thu Sep 26, 2019 7:51 am

Live audio from 1979 posted by Jym Dingler on the Jesus Music facebook group when he was with them on drums:

Live at Six Flags Great Adventure, New Jersey, Sept 1979. Ending of Praise Ye The Lord into The Doxology. From a cassette recording of the monitor mix.

Live at the Mabee Center in Tulsa, October 1979. Greg X Volz (lead vocals, bass), Bob Hartman (guitar, vocals), Steve Schneider (keys, BG vocals), Jym Dingler (drums, BG vocals). Mixed from a 2nd-gen dub cassette from a multi-track.

Very cool. Not many live recordings from that far back!

I thought John Slick wrote Doxology? He wasn't even a band member in 79...

Come to think of it, Praise Ye the Lord hadn't been released yet either. It is entirely possible that they wrote it and played it live before they recorded it though.

Doxology the tune, aka “Old 100th” was written in 1551. So no, not by John Slick. He would probably be credited for the arrangement as recorded on the album, however.

Regarding the original topic, that is pretty decent quality for a live recording from 1979. Looks like there are also some good clips from 1978 on YouTube that I haven’t seen before. Makes me wonder where the full length original masters are.

Very impressive to hear Greg play bass live and sing too, some cool base lines here. Lots more respect for Greg.

You can get a concert from 1980 at philkeaggy.bandcamp.com featuring, Greg, Keaggy, Doug Pinnick and Jerry Gaskill from Kings X. Pretty cool sounding and they even play Praise Ye The Lord.

You can see Greg playing guitar on the far right. I am amazed about how he could play and keep up with a master like Keaggy and 2 of the best bass and drum players in the world, Doug and Jerry. Says a lot about Greg's God given talent.

The song must have been played live before they recorded NSD then

That's amazing. Phil Keaggy is one of the greatest guitar players I know. Not only does he have amazing technical skills, he can play many styles of guitar. Also he can write songs and sings very well

Another one:

Petra | Yahweh Love | October 1979 at the Mabee Center, Tulsa.

Greg X Volz (lead vocals, bass), Bob Hartman (guitars, vocals), Steve Schneider (Hammond B3, Arp String Ensemble, Arp Odyssey, BG vocals), Jym Dingler (drums, BG vocals). Source is 2nd-gen cassette dub from multi-track recording, cleaned up as much as possible for a 40-year-old cassette.

Jym has now posted the full version of Praise Ye The Lord and Doxology instead of just an excerpt:

Jym says that he has it, just buried in his offsite collection. He said that these were the best ones and that he had digitized them for that reason a while back. But, eventually he says he's going to do the rest, including another Phoenix complete show, if I understand him correctly. He said most of his recordings though have bad electrical work in them though because they used to use the same power source for everything and you can hear the popping noises from the lights because of it. Yahweh Love and Magic Words was the ultimate find, I'd never heard those live before. It's all gold though at this point.
