Yeeeah. PDC3 is in the works. Don't know if JS is in the cards (wallet).

Brent, you have to get JS. I haven't seen anyone bring out this kind sound in JS other than Petra. I am behind it $$$

The person who uploaded this should be spanked, but man this is one of favourite song of all time.

Wow, John sounds amazing.

And I love that he's willing to do these "little" projects for no-name bands.

(Although perhaps I shouldn't say "no-name bands", because that might be demeaning; I just means bands without high profile name recognition.)

Well, It's $10k for him to record vocals on an album. So...send your cash, check or money order.

So, like, $2000 per song? Or is it a flat fee regardless of how many songs he actually performs?

Also I wonder if this is all payment to John for his time or if it's also for services like session musicians, hiring studio, mastering +mixing etc. That's drive to up a great deal.

These are private negotiations for "Work For Hire". We can only comment on what the fees cover:

Work For Hire means we receive vocal tracks only and use them any way we see fit, for as long as we want. We could do remixes once a month for 10 years. A Work For Hire contract pays more money on the front side, instead of royalties, mechanicals, etc on the backside.

John has a vocal booth/studio at his house. That saved us both money. He only has to pay an engineer to come load the sessions (usually ProTools), engineer the session, make back-ups, upload to FTP, etc. John used his son-in-law last time for that.

Sometimes, we pay royalties over and above the flat Work For Hire fees. John and Louie's managers negotiated for payment on the front side AND royalties on anything over X units sold. They both asked for the same number of units sold. Their managers were so convinced name cache would bring those numbers. This was at the end of Petra's run. Petra couldn't even sell the requested number of CDs themselves. We had the Soundscan numbers. We double-checked to make sure they wanted to do those deals. But, we did it. We hoped those numbers would come, for their benefit and ours.

The only way any of us were moving that many units without returns was theft and bootlegging. We to pay for units sold through distribution, not units shipped, stolen, bootlegged, etc. Those are two different things. We were getting CDs returned that were poorly produced overseas. The cost and effort of recouping, accounting and reporting all if it was a huge pain in my posterior.

There we have it. It is pretty common to pay $1k per song, per musician. It's VERY common. That said, some musicians make less because their contributions are less involved or require as much work. Bass players are far less expensive. I can have Tim Gaines play for $250 a song. Bruce Kulick formerly of KISS (a GREAT player) is $1K. So, you can see how it adds up and how impossible it is to recoup expenses. The musicians make out well. They are paid for work and move on. We do the work of a label, without the resources, do the writing, producing, mixing, mastering, manufacturing (not so much of that anymore) and then hope we get something from streaming. We make about $50 for 5,000 streams. I think that is a good number. That's what we average from Spotify, iTunes, and all of the others combined. Nobody is making money on streaming unless they are getting paid to put it on the service.

Thanks again Brent for the insight. How many songs do you have down for PDC3? Maybe do a single, as we have talked before albums are dead.
