Mountain Man. I have played Guitar in many bands, at my church and all around since 1986. That is my instrument. Greg is playing correctly and confidently, and the right chords for Angel of Light, even the minor G chord on the chorus, while singing. He is very capable, just listen to what he does on the 1979 concert audio on bass. Your comments come from ignorance of the instruments. Many singers play guitar and put it on their side on several occasions during songs. If you want to get some education just go to Phil Keaggy's site and download the concerts from 1980. There Greg is playing with non other than Phil, Doug Pinnick and Jerry Gaskill from Kings X. If you don't know who King's X is, google it, and you will see that they are the Musician's band, admired by the pros. Just playing beside Jerry, Doug and Phil Keaggy, the best guitar virtuoso Christain Music ever heard gives you more than enough cred. I invite to try even try to play Yaweh Love right. They did a whole tour together for a couple of years. They even played Praise Ye The Lord, and Greg even does a couple of impressive Guitar solos.
Check it out before putting down Greg any further.
I'm a guitar player, too, and I wasn't putting Greg down. I was simply expressing my observations. Yes, Greg is capable of playing the correct chords at the correct time, which is why I consider him a passable guitarist, but my overall impression based on videos I've seen is that he doesn't look like someone who is comfortable with the instrument (maybe that's just how he plays?), and his contributions to Petra's live shows are minimal as far as his guitar work is concerned. Perhaps you have links to some videos where he tears down the house with his playing? Feel free to share them.

Mountain man, thank you for your reply. I appreciate a fellow guitarist input. I will try to find a way to share the tune from the Phil Keaggy concert that shows Greg's guitar playing. If you go to YouTube and type Petra Live 1979 you can find the clips posted by the Petra drummer for that year and hear Greg playing Bass live on Yaweh Love, Magic Words and Praise Ye The Lord while singing, just like Paul McCartney and Sting do, of course which much simpler lines.
I apologize if my tone sounded harsh, no need for that.

No worries. My skin is an inch thick and tough as old leather. It takes a lot more than that to offend me.

Speaking of Greg and guitars, there's a moment in Captured in Time and Space when a stage hand runs a guitar out to him but forgets to bring him a pick. So Greg first checks his pockets for one, then he glances off stage and holds up his hand with thumb and forefinger pressed together to signal someone to bring him a pick, which of course nobody does because it just looks like a random gesture if you don't know what he's doing. You can see him try to strum a few chords with his thumb but he quickly gives that up. Finally during a break in the lyrics, he walks over and grabs a pick off of Bob Hartman's mic stand.

That bit always cracks me up. Only reason I even noticed it is because I was trying to figure out why Greg wasn't playing more until I realized, "He doesn't have a guitar pick!"

Always felt a little odd about this one, but knowing it was being recorded for release I assume they needed the shot anyway. At one point he grabs a pick from the mike stand I think.

Hey,

Does anyone happen to know the venue for this Atlanta show?

I recall that we played at a very large suburban Atlanta church where either Myron LeFevre was involved, or he played the same show. Might have been Mt. Paran Church of God. Wikipedia states that he had been a janitor there, but he'd probably been promoted before we ever played there.

Hey, John,

If you ever get a spare moment, take a look at our Petra tour history page and let me know if you have any additional info (venue, opening act, etc.) for any of the 1981-1983 shows listed, or if we might have missed a concert.

Thanks!

Bert

Those are some awesome videos. Seeing Bob and Greg sing "backsliding blues" together was a real treat.

From @Jym Dingler, former drummer of Petra in the 70s, posted this clip, along with another of Angel of Light, on the Jesus Music Group. This is as rare and as powerful as it gets! Here are his notes:

Petra in Atlanta, 3 May 1982: The Medley.
This clip was salvaged from an ancient VHS backup from 3/4” U-Matic broadcast master, and is part of a much-longer concert. Restoration of the entire event from 3/4” U-Matic is pending the end of California’s sheltering-in-place.

Songs: Come And Join Us, I’m Thankful, Magic Mirror, Greg versus Bob, Backsliding Blues, God Gave Rock ’n’ Roll To You

Petra lineup: Bob Hartman (guitars/vocals), Greg X. Volz (lead vocals/guitar), Mark Kelly (bass/vocals), John Slick (keys/vocals), Louie Weaver (drums)

Are we going to get the full concert soon? I'd be happy to pre-order a copy
