Sabbath Rest

Post by Michael » Sat Nov 12, 2005 5:05 pm

Good points, RockOn. I think the question we need to ask is whether a business is required to take a Sabbath rest. It's one thing if employees are working seven days a week; then they haven't had a rest. A business isn't a person, though.

BForm... I'd say your argument strikes me as one of the strongest so far on this thread. At least it has its basis in the Word... instead of just traditional practice, which I think is more or less what the rest of us were going by. I'm still not completely convinced that it is even conceivable to be non-hypocritical in this in the U.S. Do you watch TV on the Sabbath? Someone is at the station making that happen. What if that person is a Christian? Ever eat our on the Sabbath? What if a Christian prepared your meal? Shop at Wal-Mart on the Sabbath? If you put on most job applications that you refuse to work on Sunday (or Saturday, whatever), I seriously doubt you'd get hired. It's possible to make it in the States with a "no work on Sunday" personal policy, but it would be tough.

BForm...I don't get it.

I agree with you Rock. I kind of chuckled when I saw the explanation of church workers needing to buy materials on The Lord's Day, as if that would be their only opportunity. Sure, we don't know anyone's heart for certain. However, a quick look at what seems to govern the rest of their decisions makes a sudden spiritually motivated one unlikely.
I'm not going to spend a lot of time on this 'cause, frankly, it ticks me off.

#1 - When an actual regional manager of the chain tells me that this was part of their reasoning, why would I be inclined to disbelieve him?

#2 - I was trying to suggest that there are many times that I find that it is nice to have an opportunity to do my "Christian" work for Sunday School ON SUNDAY...rather than having to stop what I'm doing and wait until later in the week to knock it out. For example, today I needed to grab some posters to hang in the classroom that I had missed earlier in the week. It was great to go pick them up and then take them right back to my room and actually be done for the week.

#3 - Does your church have a bookstore? If not, then this doesn't pertain to you. However, if it does, is it open on Sunday? 99% of the ones I've seen are open on Sunday so doesn't that kind of poo-poo your thinking for that part?

#4 - Last , but not least, did you forget that (again probably 99%) most church workers are volunteers that actually have to work away from the church during the week?

OK...rant over...no need to chuckle about what is reality for many of us! Does Family need to be open on Sunday? Nope. Is their STATED reasoning bad? Are we in a position to doubt their heart (as you did say)?

T'anx!

oh...p.s. Where do we all get off being angry about "Street Team Delays" or the "Final Mix" of the Farewell disc? Are we all in Petra now? Do we actually work for Inpop? Give me a break, huh?

Churches with stores in them...yes.

Hi...many of the churches that I've gone to on recent trips have a small store in their lobby (large churches, 1000+ parishoners, etc.). Mostly currently-related items to their church. For example, if Petra were playing one of these churches, the store would have their CDs, etc.

I always thought this was common for larger churches!

See ya
