What do you think about home schooling Kids
What do you guys think about it?
My daughter is having a differcult time in the first grade cause her teacher is just down right mean to her. She is scared to go to school. She screams bloody murder when I put her on the bus. I finally sat down with Anna and asked why. She said her teacher yells at her and told her that she is getting coal and switches for Christmas. I am so flaming mad right now... I feel like going up to that school and just tell that teacher a piece of my mind. But, being in the flesh, We as humans often make the mistake of saying something that is not christian like. So, my husband and I are going to the board of education today to get started on home school her and my son.
I just feel like I can give them one on one attention. And plus Anna's teacher is wanting to fail her just because she can't give her the education that she needs...
If you don't mind keep us in prayers about it today while we go to the school board today.

Myself and my three sisters were all home schooled for different lengths of time.
I am now a public school teacher, so I have a bit of a unique perspective on the subject.
First of all I am generally not for home-schooling. It has to do with the whole idea of people being trained to do certain things. There are reasons for going to a professional for the services they can render. I also really believe in the social aspect of school. I don't think it can be recreated in any other atmosphere.
Having said that, I certainly believe that some parents do a great job home schooling their kids. And home schooled kids turn out great, in many cases.
I would ask WHY? What is the purpose for bringing the student out of an accredited school with trained personell? For some the schools may lack accreditation. Or perhaps the quality is sub-par (I think this is rare). Some folks just really believe in Parent-child education, and I can respect that.
I really worry when I hear folks talk about "escaping" something.
Have you gone down to the school and scheduled an appointment with the teacher and principal? I teach middle school and the other I had a parent really upset with me. Her son was mad about a punishment he recieved from me and was communicating one thing to mom, and then something different to me, and this went back and forth for a couple of days until we finally said "whoa". I had a sit down with the mom, child and principal, and we found out the boy had been trying to play both sides of the fence.
At your daughters age I would want to sit down and talk this out before making a decision so drastic. It may very well be that the reason she is scared is not the teacher, but another student. I have seen young children project their fear onto someone that makes "sense" rather than the real culprit. Most children know that if another child bothers them then they are told "work it out". but if they blame teacher, well that would garner attention.
If the teacher really said what your daughter is suggesting then I would be really shocked.
I could think of several other things that might be going on. I would definately set up a meeting, and go in, like you said - in control and with a Christian spirit. I know how hard it is, I have a little boy too. If someone hurt him physically or emotionally I would be ready to rip people to shreds. But I would get the whole story, from everyone involved - you might be suprised.
Then once you have resolved the issues, pray aboput home schooling and God may very well be leading you in that direction.

It is totally ridiculous that a teacher would do that to a child; there's no excuse for it. You don't have to confront in an angry way, but you should ask for a meeting with the teacher and principal, ask them why Anna's being yelled at and let them know you want her out of that atmosphere and don't want her screamed at. There are some good home schooling programs that have good curriculum for you to follow you can check into. There are probably groups for kids who are home schooled too for them to connect and do things together so they don't get isolated.

Well, there are different people who fill home school is best. Public schools teaches evolution. Where our kids can't be taught creation .. God.. Plus, I don't want my kids exposed to teachers that will teach things of not of God.
Georgia is one of the worst states of education low scores. The public schools are horrible here. Ga is behind. And I have requested many times for my daughter to put in special education so she could get the help she needed. But, they won't and so she is getting more behind. And the teacher is not taking the time that Anna needs. My child is not going to be yelled at. My cousin was home schooled and did better than public. Cause you have to remember all kids are not at the same levels as other kids.
but, I shouldn't have put this subject on here. cause there gonna be different opinions.

I agree with Shell, it's great to post topics that may provide more than one point of view! I do happen to disagree, but that's ok, we all come from different places in life.
I know that there are bad teachers out there, and bad school systems. I also know that our love for our kids causes us to sometimes have a different perception about some circumstances.
My point was that I didn't hear anything in the original post that sounded like parent and teacher had met together to discuss the problem. I think that is a MUST. It's also a Biblical principle.
There very well may be cause to remove the child from the school, but I wouldn't do it before I talked with the teacher and adminstration.
Also if she indeed does special education needs, you may want to think about alternatives to home schooling, as there are many teaching methods, and development practices that a non-certified person might be unaware of.
As far as this statement, let me offer a question. Would you rather your children be sheltered from all things "non-Christian" then go into the world without ever having dealt with this, or allow them to be exposed while they are young and you can explain the Truth at home?
I plan to do the latter. While doing homework and talking about the school day, this is the time I want to offer Biblical truth in comaprison to the world.

In the end, I think you need to evaluate whether or not you think your daughter is going to get a good education. Mean people are a fact of life; the sooner she figures out how to deal with it, the better.
Education is principally learning how to learn. In some respects, homeschooling is harder (in my opinion) in this regard, because you are also teaching your children what you want them to learn; there are fewer alternatives, fewer avenues of disagreement and discussion. Well-roundedness may be a little more difficult, though you may find that it's easier to advance through material faster.
I've taught college programming and karate to all ages and abilities.; but I'm not a teacher by profession or training. I think Cross makes a few good points (though I think the social aspects of schooling can be achieved in a lot of different ways).
Ultimately, if the teacher isn't teaching your daughter her multiplication tables, then you should be concerned. But if she's meanspirited and angry, explain that to her as best you can and see where it goes. I didn't want to go to first grade either, and I had a pretty nice teacher (in retrospect).

I appreciate everyone's advise. But, my kids are not going to public school. They can interact with non christians in our neighborhood cause there are tons of them. I done talked with the principal about the teacher.
He is not doing a thing. I am not going to let my daughter be tortured by that teacher. And, can't switch schools cause of the district. I don't like the education here in GA. It is not worth a dime here. My kids will be better taught by me.
And my kids are not gonna be taught by the government ... They don't own my kids. God gave them to me. I am willing to give one on one attention to teach my kids. The schools can't even provide that.

Until the fall of this year I was homeschooled and I have just completed my first semester of work in college. I would say that being homeschooled has prepared me very well in the academic side for college and life. On the other hand I have had a huge culture shock coming college. I will admit to anyone who asks that I was sheltered. What I don't think is that that is all bad. Being with my parents and at home most of the time gave me the chance to build many good habits and Godly habits that have been helpful to me here in college. I did have contact with non-christians most of my life through things like rec sports when I was young and later on working at different jobs. In response to those who argue that homeschooling is pulling back I am wondering how ready is a young child who is just beggining to grasp the concepts of the gospel really ready to shine forth. It seems to me it is more putting a lamb among wolves. To LawryFan I encourage you to find supprot form other homeschoolers because they can help you find curriculum, resources, and give advice.

Well, if kids feel shelter then the parents are not taking them out places and meeting friends. My husband's base has a youth center that helps kids interact with other friends who are home school. So, it is not like my kids will be sheltered. Just getting more one on one attention to meet their needs. Which public school is not giving them. I am not fighting with the schools anymore. I done fought with them for years. Enough is enough.
My daughter started today . I have not been online much this morning due to it. Which is fine cause I love teaching her. And David will be home with us tomrrow. He went with my husband to Altanta Ga to doctors.

Good for you!
I was homeschooled and it was the best thing that could have happened to me. I graduated at the top of my class...
Really though, I graduated with a 4.0 GPA and I never had problems socially. Anyone who has met me from the zone can attest to that! It's all in how you determine things are going to be.
There are those who shelter their kids from the world, but in most cases it really has nothing to do with homeschooling. Those parents are going to try to shelter the kids no matter what school they go to. You have one chance to raise up your children in the way they should go. None of us know what you are experiencing with that particular school. There are good teachers and schools, and yes there are bad teachers and schools. Been there, done that.
Sometimes a teacher can be perceived as mean when they are just strict or expect alot out of their students. That is ok. I had several teachers who we all thought were just mean. I have realized as I grew older that they were some of my favorite and most respected teachers.
On the other side, I have experienced what it is to have a teacher who just doesn't like you. My 7th grade math/science teacher was an athiest. She didn't like me. She would toss my homework assignments into the trash right in front of me. No because they were late, just because she didn't like the fact that I was a Christian and that people knew it about me. She made the mistake of calling my home about an assignment not being turned in that I had worked on with my grandmother at home. She knew I turned it in and thus began the turn from public school. We had conferences and it was obvious to my grandma that this lady was not doing her job. I had always been an A/B Honor roll student. For some Strange reason I got my first two E's that semester. Math and Science! I have always loved Math and Science and this teacher had problems.
At first I was going to go to a Christian school. The decision was made to homeschool. I thank God that I was homeschooled through Middle and high school. All of my friends ended up going to jail, or messed their lives up with drugs, or unwanted pregnancies. All of them!
Teach your child LawryFan. You know what's best for them. If it be homeschooling then praise God do it! Always remember to ask God for guidence in their education. Their are so many resources available to you to keep your child active and social! Be blessed!

I have talked with people who have home school their kids. They don't shelter them at all. Their kids are very socialable. And they have high scores and they got into colleger easier. What everybody does not get what I said before. Public schools can not do one on one attention like a parent can. Schools has a set time to do subjects. Some kids are slower than others. It makes it harder on the slower kids to catch up when they are in public school. When a parent have all the time in the world to teach their child.
And like I said there is an volunteer center on base that helps parents about socialization for the kids. Cause they have groups and support groups. Kids interact with each other and have fun. Plus, my kids interact with the neighbor's kids real great. They don't lack in social skills at all.
I am doing what I feel is right for my kids.

You know Matthew, you just get on my nerves with your outlandish rediculous, finger pointing, rounding everybody into one pile posts!
I still love you though.
Don't think for one second that you know why people homeschool their children! People homeschool their kids for many different reasons. I was homeschooled and it wasn't to shelter me from anything! It was because it was the best choice for our situation. I was a strong christian and wouldn't have been easily lead into sin just because I was in a public school!
Your comments are ignorant and rude. I am sick of reading your posts that are not intended to spark conversation (as you insist) but are flat out attacks and irritations to what you know people believe on this zone! Show some respect for other people's opinions for once.
Homeschooling is not for everyone and neither is public schooling! I'm glad you value your (Secular) education. Maybe one day you will value that fact that there are people who can learn better in a different invironment and they are not you! I had both sides and there were good things about my public schooling and there were bad. I recieved a great education at home and was never once sheltered or indoctrinated just because I learned at home!
Another thing. For some school systems it is the best choice because of violence and gang activity as well as drugs. Don't cutesy reply either with the fact that drugs are everywhere. Yes they are, but I grew up in the city where pressure is extreme to get into sinful activities in school. It takes a strong christian to stand in those situations and not everyone is that strong.
For your information the bible does say to raise your child in the way they should go. In a Godly home with with correct leadership and example. It is the parents decission what is best for their child. Who is anyone to tell someone they shouldn't homeschool their kid just because you liked your (secular) education! Not everyone desires a (Secular)education for their children. More parents should consider what their children are being influenced by school or otherwise. If it doesn't match up with God's word and how a christian should live then we should protect our children from it. Not to shelter and act like it doesn't exist, but to protect and inform. One way people can do this is to homeschool!
RJ, you point a mangled finger in most of your posts that points back at you! Why should this lady feel bad about making a choice she feels is right for her situation. You want people to be open minded; well, your close minded, liberal, prancing pony shows, need to stop. You act as if the people who claim to be christians in the U.S. are just way over the top. there are wackos, but a parent wanting a good education for their child and willing to sta home and give it to them because the system is failing is not a wacko. They are someone to be admired!
