No, No, No!! They use teleprompters to preach.
No, No, No!! That's just for mouthing the words, all the messages are pre-recorded at Lavarn Tripp Studios and have effects to change the voice, all messages are recycled every 5 years or so, depending how much money they need to raise during their 3 or more "Praise-A-Thons" per year.

I'm working on a YouTube bit where I will be playing both Paul and Jan Crouch practicing for "Praise-A-Thon" and they are standing in the house using a cook book for their Bible reading the directions for Chocolate Chip Cookies.

In relation to this topic, Steven Yake did an amazing job back in the 80's and 90's of capturing the band, he must have a heap of video that has never been seen, would be cool to see it. Might contact him.

Hi all, my first post here, but a big fan, and just adding my 2 cents. I'd say 85% of musical acts are piping in something through a hard drive live. Whether it is extra guitars, keyboard sounds, or vocals/backing vocals. The problem is that everyone goes to the show and wants to hear it just like the album, and that's about the only way to do it.

I hate bringing this up because I liked the lineup, but Journey was the posterchild for this from about 2003-2005. They were touring to death and toured through Steve Augeri being extremely sick, which left his vocal chords in shambles. Once that happened, he needed rest, but they didn't stop touring. To get around it, they started piping in other live versions of him singing. Depending on how he was doing that night determined how much of the show was lipsync'd. Ultimately, it was discovered, though it did not get much attention, and Steve Augeri left mid-tour to try and recover, but was ultimately let go and replaced by Jeff Scott Soto, and now Arnel Pineda. Steve would sing live, but with his mic was turned off, in the even that something happened, a switch could be flicked and he'd be live. But, there would obviously be definite difference in his vocals. Luckily, while not as strong as he used to be, Augeri has recovered to a point he can sing live again, but overall it was a pretty indepth, ellaborate cover-up until they got caught.

Bottom line is that there are probably a lot of people who want to see Greg hit those notes, but he likely can't anymore due to age on wear and tear on his vocal chords over the years, so they pipe in some vocals to cover that. It's easier to pipe in prerecorded vocals then have the band tune everything down.

Welcome to the zone!

I really think it's great that anyone is still singing after the age of 60, rock is damaging to the vocals. Greg had a rest for many years so his vocals are still good. Remember the late Micheal Jackson hadn't sang live in 20+ years it was all computer gen. So getting any singer from Petra is a big treat.

They tuned down. Greg can hit everything he did on that record and then some. I have tracks to prove it.

I listened to this the other day, and I've changed my mind a little bit. The album is not a total waste of a CD. "The Longing" is good...the rest is still meh.

I remember when they were preparing to release this album back in the day, I was totally stoked for it. I thought, "Wow! John Schlitt laying down vocals on some of the Volz-era classics!". The best of both worlds, so to speak. I could picture John doing "Beat The System" or "Rose Colored Stained Glass Windows".

Then they said it was gonna be mostly acoustic based. I thought, "Uh oh!" When it came out, I listened to it at a local Christian book store. To say I was disappointed would be a huge understatement.

I still would love to hear Schlitt sing "Beat The System"...he would kill on it. But I know that's never gonna happen. By the way, "Beat The System" is still my favorite Volz-era Petra song. Yes, I'm being serious...and don't call me Shirley!

Yeah he would!! Also, I love the live versions of John doing It is Finished and Second Wind. There was a concert where they opened with Get on Your Knees, then Second Wind was next - about 1988. They are both fabulous!! I saw it on YouTube, not in person unfortunately. That is the only version of Second Wind I've heard that I really like.

I don't like a few tunes on the God Fixation record. In fact, I hate 'em. BUT, that is a GREAT record. It just isn't a great Petra record. That would have been a good solo Schlitt record.

I thought there were a few songs on DT that were decent. "This Means War" is a good song in its own right if you just try to put the original out of your head. "Judas Kiss" is another. But, yeah, largely disappointing.

"Beat the System" is my favorite Volz song, as well. I'd love to hear a metal band cover it.
