Back to the rock live - out now on Amazon!
Re: Back to the rock live - out now on Amazon!
They didn't fade the music on the Journey CDs, but they did fade the crowd noise in and out. The edited some songs together. The greatest hits was a combination of Houston, Japan and a couple of other shows. The guitars sound horrid, with a piercing 1kHz to 3kHz boost. But that is another story.

The greatest hits live was not just various shows on one tour, but spans about 6- eight years, so yeah there is a difference in quality. Live albums have come a long way. They did release the Houston concert on cd and DVD, which was one of the first concerts that MTV broadcast way back in the day. I remember listening to the line "Born and Raised in South Detroit" and the Houston crowd went crazy. That never made sense to me until they released the whole show decades later and Steve Perry actually sang "Born and Raised right here in Houston." I seem to remember that the show in 81 was a combination of two nights, back to back.brent wrote:They didn't fade the music on the Journey CDs, but they did fade the crowd noise in and out. The Petra BTTR live cd sounds great, but there is little banter between tracks, and the set list is limited to the BTTR album which makes it a sort of strange live album. It almost reminds me of the Intense Records live series back in the 90's, only Petra used an actual audience.

Re: Back to the rock live - out now on Amazon!
Today I was able to purchase the album (it\'s now available internationally on iTunes under Classic Petra) and I finally have a chance to listen.
I\'ve just heard a couple of songs but this is not what I would expect from a live record. I knew they had some backup tracks at the show in Nashville, but it\'s just too much. I\'m not too fond of samples and backup tracks anyway, but sometimes I even seem to hear rhythm guitar playing during a solo (??? there only one guitar player, right?) and when there\'s backup vocals it seems like Greg is backing up himself. That\'s really, really fake.
As a loyal pethead, I\'ve bought this anyway, but releasing the audio of a DVD that coming up before the DVD is released, will tempt many people to buy the audio now and then later the DVD (which might be accompanied by a CD). It\'s an easy way to make money and probably it will attract some people who wouldn\'t be interested in buying a DVD, but in the end not many would be tempted to buy a live album with the same track list as a previously released studio album. Oh well...
I do like the artwork. They played nicely with the artwork for BTTR by adding LIVE in a similar way and the photos around the centerpiece make it look very nice. I know it\'s easy to photoshop this together, but I still like it.

Back in the physical sales day, live albums were typically free on the artists side of things, so they seldom got done, unless the artist was nearing the end of a contract. There are only a handful of cases where live albums outsold or kept the pace with studio recordings. When video hit, things changed again. Now we are in the age of downloads and cheap concert tickets. I would have been in favor of a real concert, with all of the members of Petra reuniting in their various forms, and having that on DVD, with a bonus disc of interviews, cutting up, a cartoon featuring Louie the ninja bus driver, etc. This would sell. I don't care what anyone says. Someone get Bill Gaither on the horn and lets have a Petra homecoming.

Over the last few years I've been thinking the Gaither idea would be great, I believe this is something that could get done; no doubt it would sell.

So what\'s Gaither Homecoming exactly? I\'ve heard the phrase, but I\'ve no idea what it actually is. (And I don\'t know Mutt either

We are not going to buy it because it has the same songs as the studio album. I know the songs are a bit different, but I prefer to wait until different songs are recorded. Peace and goodwill.

In case you're still wondering, it's a Southern Gospel thing. I'm not into that kind of music, but the homecoming concept is cool. Here's the Wiki link:p-freak wrote:So what\'s Gaither Homecoming exactly? I\'ve heard the phrase, but I\'ve no idea what it actually is. (And I don\'t know Mutt either)
