I just tried the test with the whole JS "Live it out loud" track. I could align it completely through out the whole track without a problem. That's a pretty loud track, yet the difference between the mp3 and the wav moves in between -24 and -36 dB through out the whole song after the intro. Sound like someone playing a strange snare drum plus some low strange whispers.

It starts with just the wav so that you will get the volume, then after 3 seconds, the inverted phase mp3 kicks in leaving just the difference between the wav and the mp3. As you can hear, it doesn't sound much compared to the original, while the result Brent got was that the difference actually was louder in volume than the original. What I don't get is that Brent could believe that his result was correct and that it was a good representation of the difference between wav and mp3. Especially after seeing the graphics I posted earlier on mp3 distortion. That is why I used the word incompetent, Brent, for not spotting that. Your wavs looks aligned in the picture you sent, so I understand that you think you did it right, and it's a simple mistake done in a hurry, but you should have spotted that your example wav was not a good representation of the difference. But when thinking about it, I get that too actually, since you have the idea that mp3 consists of 50% distortion. That is probably why you thought your result was correct.
