How long was Greg with Petra? Five or six years? John has been a part of Petra for almost 20 years now, 4 times as long. I know John is a humble guy and truly appreciates all that Petra was before he joined, but come on! The guy has to have some ego in him or he would not be able to get onstage and do what he does as well as he does. To re-release CITAS by anyone reputable is going to entail promotion. Is it really fair to expect John (and Greg and Paul for that matter) to invest time in that endeavor? To have to hear about it after every show? Can't you imagine how frustrating it would be?
I can. Let me tell you a brief story. REO Speedwagon consisted of Kevin Cronin, Neal Doughty, Bruce Hall, Alan Gratzer and Gary Richrath during the years of their primary success, 1977 - 1987. Alan (drums) left in 1987; Gary (guitar) in 1988. Both were briefly replaced by personnel who lasted less than a year. In 1989, Dave Amato became REO's guitarist and Bryan Hitt the drummer. This lineup in still intact today. They released two albums in the 90's, neither of which sold very well. But, they have been and continue to be a pretty big concert draw. I was able to spend some time with them backstage in 2000, and witnessed some appalling fan behavior. There were actually people than would come up to Dave and say, "I saw you guys 20 years ago ..." and Dave would say, "Well, you didn't see me." Half the time, you could tell by the blank looks that the people didn't get it. Then there were the people that wanted him and Bryan to sign old REO albums, even from as far back as the Live album from 1977. Dave would sometimes ask, "Are you sure?" It was very discouraging for them. The record companies kept issuing compilation CDs that did not include any songs from the two 90s albums, and in most cases, didn't include their photos. Finally in 2000, REO recorded another live album (the one with Styx, Arch Allies). Both were so happy to finally have a live recording that represented them. Dave said that "After 10 years I finally feel like I belong."
My point is that although John may or may not have a problem with re-releasing CITAS, it seems like a totally unnecessary exercise and something I don't think we should even ask him to deal with. From the way it sounds, the quality may not be that great on any re-release, so why not just get the VHS and make your own DVDs if you must have them. I would much rather see a DVD released of live Petra performances from John's era (1986 - the present). We know there have been taped performances; a concert in Washington DC from the Wake-Up Call tour, last years' World Pulse Festival, and SURELY someone taped their recent concert in India. Who knows what else exists.
Perhaps the best of both worlds would be to release a 2 DVD set with CITAS and newer footage. Now that, I could endorse.
