Three Groups Of Petra Fans
hmmmm
I became a fan in 88 when I was about 12....so I suppose that thas something to do w/ my being a Schlitt fan. Although, I remember hearing Greg's stuff when I was a kid....not realizing that he was in Petra and I loved that stuff too. Michael (MJ) and I have many a debate on this very issue....I always win!:) Nah...they are both great! John has a really neat style that I think makes him more fun to listen to. So I guess all in all I am for John and like Greg a little!;)

I know what you are saying. Greg is extremely talented and he's got this "trained" voice, like as if he has classical training you know. John on the other hand is natural, got this natural gruff/rock thing going, with an incredible range and equally as talented - just differently. I love both their voices, but enjoy John's natural voice better.

I am one of those who like John's voice better; in fact it was his voice that got me to listen to Petra in the first place. But, something that I thought was interesting was I had a friend that liked Petra when Greg was with them, but hated Petra with John. Until she heard John's solo stuff, which she loved. Now she admits that she likes the "new" Petra too. It's funny how we can get so set in our opinions that we can fool our own ears.

That's an excellent description of their differences. I always liked how Greg went for the high notes. I have a good friend who continually makes fun of it and to him, that is what characterizes Petra - Greg going for the high note.SamScales wrote:I know what you are saying. Strange how one Petra era over another seems to leave a lasting impression on people.

I guess I am one of the people in the John Schlitt camp. I've heard some of the Volz-era albums, and although Volz is a great singer, his voice just doesn't do it for me. The only song from Volz-era Petra I like is "Beat the System". I dunno...John's got the more "hard rock" sounding voice...but he also shines on the ballads (listen to "Open Book" from ON FIRE! or "Falling Up" from GOD FIXATION).
Funny thing...here in Des Moines, IA, we have a "classic-rock" station, 95 KGGO, that plays "Never Been Any Reason" by Head East at least once every couple of days. It was only after I learned about Petra that I found out that Schlitt used to sing for that secular rock band!
