Re: New Classic Petra Update as of 7-23-10
It's not a studio managers call, but it may have been something as simple as they relayed to him that they were looking for a good singer if he knew someone and Greg came to mind and so he called him to see if he'd be interested. Personally, I'm pretty confident that with Bob confirming that something along those lines happened, then I'm pretty sure it did. It was probably something rather small that got blown up over the years for whatever reason, but I don't doubt that there is a seed of truth involved.
Oh, and for the record, I know some people think they're crap, but personally I think REO is an excellent band that did some great music.

Yeah ok, not that anyone cares what my opinion is, but I thought it might be nice if someone who appreciated them said so.

The reason being is that it's been on Volz's resume for years. I have an old 10th anniversary Petra songbook that has little bio's of each band member, and under Volz, it mentions that he was offered and rejected the lead singer spot for REO Speedwagon. I suspect the whole point was to give him some "cred" by implying that he could have made it in the secular market if he really wanted to but chose Christian music instead.Preacherman777 wrote:It was probably something rather small that got blown up over the years for whatever reason...

On a serious note, though, why wasn't Volz there? It's a picture from the 2001 GMA Hall Of Fame induction, isn't it?

Re: New Classic Petra Update as of 7-23-10
I have been asked by many to explain my comment.
First, let's clear the air. That was no slam against Greg. I have heard Greg lay out the Gospel, clear and plain. I disagree with other things I have heard. I made my analysis based on lyrics of songs, sermons given at concerts, conversations and published articles. Nobody has all things right all of the time. It may be I am wrong. But at this point in my life I am cautious. Take my post in that context.
People who know me there know that I am very, very conservative. I am very skeptical of people practicing certain gifts, seeing visions or participating in supernatural events. This is not to say that they are not legit or do not occur. It is my defense mechanism. Again, this is not a slam on anyone else. I have worked for just about all of the big name Word-of-Faith guys you see on TV. I know who is legit and who is in it for the cash. I have seen staged events used to "stimulate faith in others." Most people there know this already.
I am trying to balance not wanting to be one of the ones that God tells "you denied the power thereof" ,with my decades of experiences in church and what the bible says in context.
I am not saying I am right and others are wrong. I am just saying, based on public information, I believe I am closer to agreeing more with some than others. At the end of the day, none of this affects the doctrine of Jesus Christ or our salvation.
Does that explain it?

I understand where you're at with this. I too have gathered the impression from Greg that he believes certain things that I would not be on board with. I grew up in the pentecostal movement and also spent a good deal of time around the word of faith movement. I grew out of those movements for what I feel are good biblical reasons as well as reasons based on my experiences. However, even though I would most likely disagree with Greg on some things, I do think he's genuine and there are lots of genuine people who would disagree on some secondary things. No big deal to me.

As long as it's not heretical (which a lot of popular Western theology is) then I don't have a problem with it.
