I learned about the ancient Greeks in my Humanities class last semester. Some of the facts were pretty "tragic," if you ask me.

Kan yu say Ro-o-o-o-oman?

Post by seichu kaisho » Sat Jan 15, 2005 11:14 pm

I would say that a happy ending to (a lot of) the paganism in Ancient Rome was when the Roman Emperor Constantine was converted. My Humanities textbook has an awesome story about it - how God revealed Himself to Constantine and gave his armies victory in battle. Constantine had previously been relying on the ancient Roman gods (Jupiter, etc.) to help his armies in battle, without success. Then God used the emperor to spread Christianity more rapidly among ancient Rome.

I'm hardly at all a history buff, but this is an awesome story I'll never forget. :!:

ya know, there theories of constantine not being a true christian and that what he actually did was to mix christianity with paganism.

Just wanted to mention it, I have read about it .

In what way? I don't know what you meant by that. Do you mean you don't read your school textbooks very much either? Or you like to use the word "dunno?"

Oh - maybe it's because you also think ancient Rome was seriously messed up?

If I may bring up the old conversation before the bot asserted that seichu kaisho and he shared identical thought processes.

One of the biggest reasons people argue for a mix of pagan and christian is that they are trying to discredit the Nicene Creed as pagan. They insist Modalism or Arianism is more correct than the Trinitarian view of the creed. The language formulations in the Nicene Creed are apparently very Jewish though. And I wonder what Athanasius would have thought of that belief, Him-a pagan shill!!
One also I think has to understand the uneasy dialogue that has been going on between rabbinical Judaism and Christianity since 70, and look at it in that light.

Constantine did oversee the council. He wanted clear language, hence the single word addition around which the controversy lay.
Whether he really was a Christian or not has been debated for many years, especially since the message he received, 'triumph by this', was kind of ambiguous. I do think it is safe to say God used him, as he does all things.
Though I would argue that if anyone was guilty of indirectly injecting paganism into Christianity (and even then I think much of the syncretism came later), it would be Theodosius, as he outlawed paganism altogether, and made Christianity the state religion.

That is about the extent of my knowledge on the subject though, maybe someone else can step in...
(I couldn't resist; I do so love those kinds of disscussions!)
