It's good to see Bob's using Marshall amps...hopefully he will on the BTTR US Tour as well!
I like both John and Greg, but for these older songs, Greg is my preference!

John used to be able to do a pretty respectable version of this song, but now days he really struggles with the high notes, so it's kind of rough.

Please, retire that song. Oh my. I prefer the original band. It just sounds right. But, I would prefer the original band singing Stand In The Gap too. I would be interested in hearing Greg cover Back To The Street though.

I agree, it's painful to hear John not able to reach the notes to this song. I also think it's unfair to try to judge John at this stage, when he has aged and can do other songs we great aplomb, while this is a Greg song, and it just sounds right with Greg.
That said, one of my favorite versions, if not my favorite, is the one on the II Guys CD live from Farewell!

What? John clearly struggles more. I was a bit surprised that they play it in exactly the same key for both singers.trodLAN wrote:Greg used to be able to do a pretty respectable version of this song, but now days he really struggles with the high notes. I prefer John on this one!

Surely he must have meant John used to do a respectable job. I read it that way and did not realize what he DID say until you posed the question, "What?" Good catch. They both did it in the same key, tuned down a bit.

Thats the problem, when singers come in to their 40s and 50s. Look at Michael Sweet or all die other Bands from the 80s like Europe etc...

I've always only have liked the original, but it has nothing to do with Greg/John; It's has to do with Bob, he has never been able to recapture the sound of the original.

It's true. Geddy Lee from Rush hasn't been able to hit the high notes of his youth for quite a long time now! I saw them in the mid-80s, and he was already singing songs like the Temples of Syrinx without the high notes.
It makes you wonder if singers just aren't thinking about the future when they record songs with those super high notes like that in their younger years. Or maybe it's a matter of, if you've got it, use it...and if you're still around in 20 or 30 years, worry about it then!
I'd guess it's probably some of both...and to be honest, I'm okay with that. It's so cool to hear them blast out those high notes on the record, even if they can't now.
I'm assuming some of you may have gotten some of Volz's solo albums from the 80s...the cover version he did of Dream On where he just absolutely nails that super high note...that's the stuff of legends!! I actually just found the single on iTunes...I'm gonna have to download it as I think I either lost or sold that CD. You can actually hear that part of the song right at the end of preview.

Sorry but he clearly butchered Dream On!!!!!Muleya wrote:It's true. Geddy Lee from Rush hasn't been able to hit the high notes of his youth for quite a long time now! I saw them in the mid-80s, and he was already singing songs like the Temples of Syrinx without the high notes.

Okay, the arrangement maybe, but the vocals were awesome...I'd love to hear his vocals over Aerosmith's music!executioner wrote:Sorry but he clearly butchered Dream On!!!!!Muleya wrote:It's true.
