The Journey guy? You mean Steve Perry? Hardly a voice like John or Bryan Adams. Pretty smooth overall if you ask me. In fact, there are tons of rock bands that have smoothed voiced singers and they have done very well. Granted it's not as common now days, but until about the mid 80's it was pretty common. Now if you want to talk about a voice that seemed too smooth for rock 'n' roll, well, Ozzy always stuck me as fitting that bill. No, the right thing to say here, for those it fits, is that you don't prefer smooth voiced singers for rock, but in reality, a rock voice can be anything that people will listen to and enjoy in their favorite rock bands. I mean, I can't understand for the life of me how it is that James Blunt is allowed to sing on the open air waves at all, but there are people who love him, so who am I to say.

Timbo, actually, the version from VE is the recording from the Farewell concert, but you probably already knew that.

I have to agree with you Tr! I choose John's versions of the song all the time. Although, I'm looking forward to see the classic lineup in Sweden this summer!
I agree.
I prefer John to all the songs!

Thus spoket brent:
Surely he must have meant John used to do a respectable job. I read it that way and did not realize what he DID say until you posed the question, "What?" Good catch. They both did it in the same key, tuned down a bit.
What I ment was that neither of these vocalists can reach as high as they did 20 years ago, and I think it is unfair to just tell us that "John" has lost his higher notes.

Anyway, I love both Greg and John as vocalist, - and I think it's unfair to compare these two together. They're just too different in style. I "like" Johns voice better, specially on this "Judas Kiss" song.

My first wishes for Petra nowadays is a NEW very hard record to follow up where "J&H" left. With John on vocal!
And most of all with Paul Simmons (or Borneo) on drums. (That's my 1st choice).

Anyway I am glad I finally can see Greg X Volz live with Petra. I am looking forward to the concert in Norway!

I to was hoping they would have continued with more J&H style records. The J&H/ Farewell Petra is my favorite era

I agree...J&H Petra would have been good in say....2002 and continued.

People will like what they like and no one must like the same things. Life is great.

Heart, Pat Benatar, Lita Ford were all great rock vocalists and they were not meaty, breathy, course, male singers. The Cars, the Pixies, Smashing Pumnkins all are great rock bands and did not have dark metal singers. So...debate over in my book.

I agree. Great way of putting Brent. This really is a gret time to be a Petra fan. We have all the great records they have done. We have back to the Rock in progress, however long it will last. Hopefully they bang out at least another record of classics. And John has plans to do a rocker.

Steve Perry is the greatest rock vocalist of all time. His range and versatility is (was) without peer (it's an interesting side-note that both full-time singers that have replaced him since he left have wound up straining their vocal chords trying to sing like Perry). That said, Greg Volz and John Schlitt obviously rank very highly in my book as well.

Steve Perry sounds a lot more like John than Greg. Perry is smooth with a rasp, but his smoothness comes from his soul that he has in his voice.
Perry and John both make you feel the song and its lyrical content and make you believe it; I've never not one time ever felt that with Greg.

My opinion is that this thread should end. I don't see anything positive about it. But that is just my opinion.

I like John and Greg. I didn't know about Greg until after I had been listening to John though.
