It has been brought to my attention that people may be inferring from my comments that I may be "down" on John. This is crazy. Here is my position so everyone knows:
IMO, John should be doing John music and Greg should be doing Greg music. Don't compare the two. They are apples and oranges. Both have strengths. That is it.
John has one of the best rock voices of all time. Greg has one of the most unique C rock landmark voices of all time.

Re: John vs Greg IMO
You can't compare they are two different rock genres almost.
Bob Hartman once said, when comparing Greg and John "John has more of a rock voice" I guess he meant the more "80's rock voice"
I don't know that John has a metal rock voice maybe close, but Greg's rock voice is more like original rock before bands like AC/DC introduced the gravel rock voice that is now how rock is remembered from the 80's.
Greg = classic rock sound, smooth, happy tones.
John = gravel bass tone, screamer high tone, melodic rock, metal voice.
Both are high energy.

Hmmm... here, all this time I thought Chuck Berry had "the original rock" voice or "classic rock sound".Daniel wrote: I don't know that John has a metal rock voice maybe close, but Greg's rock voice is more like original rock before bands like AC/DC introduced the gravel rock voice that is now how rock is remembered from the 80's.

Point being... every voice is different. Yes, John's voice changed over the years, but that's a lot of time and a number of albums to expect it to remain the same. Even Greg's voice has changed since 1985. Not that it's bad, just an observation.
IMO, tones depend more on the song than the singer...
E.g. Would you describe "All Over Me" or "Judas Kiss" as "happy tones"?
I'm not sure about John Music and Greg music. At my first Petra concert, John was doing quite a bit of "Greg music"... If memory serves, they started with "Get on Your Knees" and then the 2nd song was "Second Wind" (Spring, 1988 - so as you might expect there was quite a bit of a mix.) "Beat the System", "It is Finished", "This Means War", "Kenenaiah"... I'm sorry, where was I? Oh, yes. I enjoyed the mix. At the time, I only had two Petra cassettes - TMW! and MPTY, yes, I said cassettes - both were gifts. I'd heard/seen the CITAS video (pardon my French), so it wasn't as if John's "Beat the System" was the first I'd heard. Still, I was sucked in, and rounded out my collection, first in cassette, then in CD. I enjoyed John's "remakes" in concert.
So, when is Classic Petra coming to St. Louis!?!?!?! Sorry, off topic.

Did you guys get a little gust of wind or what? Anyone here from Alabama? They REALLY got it.

Re: John vs Greg IMO
We got a little bit here... not nearly what Alabama and Mississippi got over the last couple days.
For us, the power was out at home for a few minutes. The area around our church got hit pretty hard, but aside from the power being out for a couple days, the church was fine. Some of our church family are still cleaning up, though. Thank the Lord, for as much property damage as there was, nobody here lost their life.

I believe what Bob said on the revival DVD was John has a "more progressive rock voice". I may have to dust that sucker off and watch it again...it's been a while.
I personally love both, having been listening to Petra since Never Say die, and remembering my parents having the LP of Come & Join Us. I remember when Petra Praise came out and playing "I love the Lord" and then "Take Me In" back to back and nobody could believe it was the same singer...a testament to John's awesome talent. As for who's best, I'll repeat a clever quote someone else "quoted" on another thread...the little girl from Backstage Pass who said "I think Petra is a good singer!". Even though she was referring to John, the quote itself sums it all up...They're both the best for what they did, and Petra's fans are the luckiest by far!

That must have been an AWESOME concert!! My very favorite YouTube videos of all time might be from that concert. "Get on Your Knees" was first, then "Second Wind," by far the best versions of those 2 songs I've ever heard, even though the audio is not great.bjh wrote:At my first Petra concert, John was doing quite a bit of "Greg music"...
