I think

Post by executioner » Wed Apr 20, 2005 7:09 pm

I think of what has been said on here about Petra retiring has been over stated. I think until we hear something from the band that we need to let this issue die. This sounds totally different from how Bob was talking during the Shoutfest tour, he was like a little kid running around with a new toy.

The Zone is a discussion board, and so long as we're civil about it, not making assumptions when we haven't heard any "official" announcements and not trying to take care of the band's business for them, I think it's okay to talk about it. It's gonna happen one day, guys; that shouldn't really be a surprise to anyone.

Whatever happens, the Lord is in control and the best thing we can do is pray for them.

Maybe Bob will surprise us and jump in and tell us rumors of his retirement are greatly exaggerated.

Here's an idea!! Maybe to extend Petras' career, they could come and live Down Under in Aussieland and use us as a base for their European tours  .

I do agree with LexingtonPethead about bringing in new blood if Bob and John want to give it away. They have talked about Petra being a ministry, not just a band. This could be a way of keeping them going. Bob could go behind the scenes and John could re-kickstart his solo career. It would be strange though not having those guys upfront.

If Petra end up retiring and finishing up with a live album, I wonder if they would put any new material on it! They have been talking about working on new songs! Still hanging out for at least one last rock album.

separateunion wrote:
[I can't really speak for Pillar, since I've only heard one song, but I can tell you flat out that people enjoy Relient K a lot more because of their witty, tongue in cheek lyrics as opposed to (what they consider) the preachy lyrics Petra uses.

But a comparison between the two bands isn't really fair because they are two completely different genres. Relient K is more of a teeny bopper punk band while Petra is a blues rock, more adult style band.]

I can understand where you're coming from with the different styles in the two totally different bands. I agree.

It's a bit hard to digest though, that anyone christian could "accuse" Petra of having "preachy lyrics". Isn't that what we as christians are "all" about. For those christians who do think Petra and other similar bands are too preachy, shame on you. What Petra does should be what we are all about. Having enough guts to stand up for Jesus Christ and telling people how it is instead of hiding behind some watered down message that can be taken about ten different ways. I'm not suggesting that is what Relient K is like, I've never heard them, and I'm not suggesting that's what you (separateunion) think either :) . It just annoys me that the world is having more of an influence on the church and what we say and how we say it, than the church is having on the world. We need to have enough spine to stand up for Jesus Christ in this world in all we do and say (or sing). He did it for us, and we didn't deserve standing up for. How's that for preachy :?: :?:

Please understand separateunion, this wasn't directed at you!! Just people who aren't prepared to live Jesus out there on their sleeves. God bless :D .

Just read your post Shell and I couldn't agree more. I know I'm greedy in asking for more  . It's (retirement) between them and the Lord, not for us to dictate to them what we want. Whatever happens I've had my "socks blessed off" by the Lord through these guys.

That's a great point, Shell. Bob is known to lurk here from time to time. I hope the rumors are exagerated... I just can't imagine these guys calling it quits anytime soon.

i`m a fan like you but the idea of Petra`s "new generation" with a "younger john" and a "younger bob" is incredibly nuts!.

that they can help other bands to succeed...yes, that they can write music, lyrics or produce CD`S for other bands...yes. BUT, Petra is Petra, it wouldn`t be the same ya know. We love Bob and John and we gotta admitt petra would not be petra without them. at least that`s my point of view though you have the right to disagree with it since people said the same when greg left the band so...

epdc,
It definately wouldn't be the same, but as you point out, it wasn't the same when John came in after Greg either  . Very different styles, yet both amazing. I love listening to both of those guys sing. John with his in your face rock voice and Gregs' ballads (this is starting to sound like it belongs on another thread). Incredibly nuts!. Maybe  . We'll wait with great anticipation to see what God lays on their hearts. :D

I would hope that Bob would continue to write, publish and maybe produce other talent.

Great Scott, can't believe Petra played in the Faroe Islands! That's, like, remote! Why can't they get to South America again? I'm pretty sure they could get some crowds.

(But not Brazil ... it's not practical for me to go there ... but I could do Colombia, Ecuador, or Peru without much trouble.)

I wouldn't rule out Petra getting younger replacements for John and Bob, on tour. That could perhaps keep them going a while longer. What I like about Petra the most, by far, is Bob's songwriting. I don't necessarily care who plays the guitar, and even who sings (though John IS good). As long as Bob writes music, I'm happy. :D And he could, if he wished, do that in retirement, for other bands to play.

I do wish there were more songwriters like Bob. I love both his style of music and theological depth. I don't like "feel-good" type songs with silly lyrics.

Amen, Micah. :D There is none better than Bob IMO. May he write songs 'till he's 150. Actually, while we're at it, may John sing songs 'till he's 150. Hey, if Petra's still around by then, Paul and Greg will be into their 120's and they could do a world tour called "This really is Beyond Belief!!"

Ministry

Post by Corval » Sun Apr 24, 2005 1:00 pm

All these news make me feel sad cause I think Petra could still survive for years. petra is serious ministry.

Well, but we all know the retire will occur some day...
Lets pray forever cause they need always.

And even they go to retire...their songs will touch many hearts forever!

Be in peace

I love petra and everyday I pray for them... I ask God to give them strenght and health to go on. I always saw petra as a ministry. And I think we should ask God to help this ministry, and never let it ends. Maybe, some day, shortly, Bob is unable to play his guitar, and John is unable to sing. When it happens I think that some new guys will take the control of petra's ministry. may be you, may be me...

See, Elo? I'm not incredibly nuts. 8) If Bob and John retired from the road and studio, they could still be involved behind the scenes, and Petra could move forward with new blood.

Here's my rationale: you wouldn't stop going to your home church because your minister decided to retire, would you? Then why would you stop listening to new Petra after Bob and John eventually decide to retire? Sure, it would be different. But it would still be Petra because of the ministry, not because of who is in the band.

Besides, even if Petra moved on with a new guitarist and vocalist, I doubt very seriously if Bob and John would be totally out of the picture. I think a new Petra would resemble the old in many ways, especially if Bob continued to be the primary songwriter. :)

weeeeeeeell, I DON`T THINK SO but ya know, we gotta be open minded, anything can happen and it can work and I still think about greg`s volz example and many other members who left the band too and because of that we had other incredibly people there.

SO, Who knows? it could be what you say David :)

What would be the purpose of a "new" Petra, when the "old" Petra isn't getting anywhere in today's fickle ccm market?

The problem is not that John is too old or too tired, or that Bob has dried up.

The problem is that Petra has a two-fold reputation:

1. They are an upstanding band/ministry with commitment to spreading the Gospel (no one is arguing with that)

2. They are a band that has seen their prime and are looked upon as old, outdated and no longer relevant with today's "hottest and hippest" ccm mentality (very arguable statement)

While WE see the value and musicianship in the band, OTHERS see them as has-beens still trying to hang on.

There are many, many other aspects to why Petra has this part of its reputation that it does; but let me talk about just this one.

In focusing on just this aspect: Petra HAS reworked the band already. To go with the flow of today's rock bands, they lost the keys, went with a more modern sound with JAH, hired a new drummer and has a totally live band with no background tracks in concerts, and STILL few dates and slow album sales.

Again, alot of reasons factor in to why this is, but the bottom line is that Petra has a long history and a good reputation, ministry-wise. While upstanding and untarnished in its ministry, the band's longevity and age is hurting them in ccm's "hottest & hippest" market.
