This is true, no different than the raging debates among Van Halen fans about David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar. It's really funny when you consider that both lead singer changes happened right about the same time, both Sammy and John saw greater heights of commercial success than did their predecessors, Dave and Greg both appeared on the same number of studio albums before leaving and both have now returned to being the lead singers for their respective bands and not that far apart time there either. Heck, there may even be more things in common if I really thought about it.

Quite a few bands have changed lead singers, and it worked. As mentioned Van Halen did it once with success. Genesis, AC/DC,Styx (although both sang together for a while), Journey (Rollie to Perry), all did it with success. Fans still argue about who is better in the case of Genesis, Van Halen and Journey. Not so much the others. It's just what people do.

I have to admit I find the whole John/Greg-Discussion a little bit annoying. PETRA had it´s ups and its downs. There where good times with both of them and there were less good times with both of them. So is life...
Bob has been in the Band für 24 years, Louie für 22, John for 19, Greg für round about 10-12 years. PETRA is not, never has been and never will be about persons. PETRA always has been about a ministry. And my personal opinion is: the downs in the band always came, when it got too much about persons.
That´s why I like classicPETRA but am not 100% satisfied by it. Für my point of view, when they disbanded in 2005 the ministry endet. So I don´t know for now, what classicPETRA is. One of much revivals, because of a music industry, that struggles? So we bring back the bands, people in their 40s liked when they where kids/teens/twens? Not only the christian, but as a whole...a lot of sacular bands from these times are coming back or have been in the last years.
It´s not my part to judge over the motives of classicPETRA. I just think what they do they should do right. That means, they have to make money to get out there. It´s not helpful bringing things out of the closet, that have been in the past.
Whatever has been between them, it should rest in peace...

Fans do argue about Styx. There are many who won't even go see Styx now because they won't accept it as Styx without Dennis and really, Styx without Dennis has never seen anywhere near the success that they saw with Dennis, so I don't think they make a very good example all the way around. The others though, I would agree.

I love Styx now. They put on a good show. They mostly play the songs that Dennis did not front. So, as long as they do that, I buy it. The remaining members are still top shelf musos. Word is they are starting to cover some of the Darn Yankess tunes this year. Should be cool.

I think Dennis has produced far better solo material, which sounds much more like Styx than most of what Styx has been able to produce without him. The remaining guys did mange to produce a couple decent, Styx sounding songs, but that's about it. Plus they replaced Dennis with a guy who can't sing one tenth as well as Dennis which has always boggled my mind. They should have tried to get Michael Sweet, now that guy could cover Dennis, much better than he covers Brad Delp.

I'll buy your Styx pov, but most of the folks I jow that like Styx don't mention it much. That being said, I think the whole band can sing- they can really play too.

This is why I quit comparing Petra to VH. VH got their first singer when Sammy came. DLR was the front man. Styx has had singers before and after Dennis.

There was no before Dennis. Dennis was a founding member. Other people have sang leads, Tommy Shaw and James Young for the most part and they are fine, but Lawrence Gowan, that they replaced Dennis with...not so much. In fact, the guys that Dennis got for his band to fill the roles that Tommy and James played in Styx are far, far better replacements. If you haven't seen Dennis live lately, you should look it up. He doesn't need Styx anymore.

You got me. My point remains. Dennis was not the sole vocalist. I saw the Dennis show with the band and orchestra. While Dennis is great, I preferred him with the Tommy Shaw version of Styx, not the version out while Tommy was in DYs. It is like watching Volz sing Petra with no Petra. It is not the same thing.

Dennis has updated his band since he was doing the orchestra thing. If you check out his website he has lots of videos posted on there of the orchestra thing he did as well as with his new band. The new band is flat out awesome. I saw him a couple years ago and he was awesome with the band he had then, but this band is even better.

Having said that, I think all Styx fans would like to see the real Styx back together with both Dennis and Tommy, but since Styx has now removed Dennis' name even from the history page on their website, it would seem safe to say that they have no love for Dennis.

1. Never liked anything Styx has done

2. Sammy is clearly so much better than Roth, but I think I liked the song style in the Roth era better; just always thought he was a joke.

See what I mean? Petra fan quibbling over lead vocals is no different than other bands, although it seems as if it may be better than Styx and VH :)

I wouldn't disagree with this. Where it comes to being a true singer, there is no question Sammy had the better voice, but yes, the overall musical style during the Hagar era was no where near as good as in the Roth era. It will be interesting to see when the new album with Roth comes out if they are able to recapture that sound.
