And the runner-up is…

Post by zman7720000 » Sun Oct 30, 2011 4:34 pm

We all know that the greatest lead singer(s) to ever grace the stage is/are Mr. Greg X. Volz and/or Mr. John Schlitt. This subject has been covered extensively through the years! In the interest of lightening up a little, I thought it would be interesting to examine the second best.

Bob sang extensively on PETRA, their 1974 self titled debut and on their sophomore effort Come and Join us in 1977.

Greg sang and played guitar a bit on their 1974 self titled debut. He was a founding member and left the band in 1979

Rob preformed only on 1979s Washes Whiter Than.

Pete was a member of Petra from 1996-2000. Pete sang lead for only one song Breathe in which he also wrote.

Honorable mentions –
Mark Kelly, for his work on Disciple and The water is Alive and for BGVs.

John Elefante, for his BGVs through the years and We Need Jesus.

Lou Gramm, For We Need Jesus.

I vote Bob

Although I really like what Mark Kelly did on Disciple as well.

"Pethead" is not a title. It's a way of life.

To answer the question on the basis of pure vocal ability, there is no question that the runner up would be Rob Frazier.

I've always felt that Greg and John were the only true lead singers in Petra's history. Fraizer was never going to cut it as a rock vocalist, Bob was in there because there was nobody else, Mark & John L. could do spot vocals like they have.

Rob Frazier was really good. Kind of a proto-Greg. His work on some of the live stuff that's been posted here is quite excellent. Hands-down Petra's third-best vocalist.

Sorry, Bob fans, but his voice makes those early songs nearly unlistenable to me.

- Paul

A little disoriented. Getting reoriented.

Rob Frazier does sound a like GXV, he has some really cool albums that came out in the mid 80's.
