The Part I don't Understand
It's hard for me to understand why Petra needs a record label. I mean, in recent years, what good has it really done them? The sales Petra has had, have really come off of their name recognition alone, because they really haven't received any significant promotion, and it hasn't seemed to do them a lot of good so far as touring is concerned either. Neither has it provided them with enough income to keep the guys from having to have other sources of income.
It's seems to me that that Bob and John could just as easily do studio projects that they could release independently and not be any worse off than they have already been lately.
I don't know, maybe I'm all wet, but that's just the way I see it.

I
I agree most of what has been done over the last few years has been by word of mouth from the fans. Inpop has no budget for Petra, and the management gave them no support either.

Guys, the idea that Inpop hasn't given them a lot of support is a valid one. But you know, nobody forced them to sign with Inpop. That was their decision, and you can't tell me they were totally in the dark about what they might be getting themselves into when they signed that contract. They're not dummies, and they're not young people just starting out. They've been in the biz a long time and understand how things work.

Whoa, there, guys... The truth is that Inpop really lifted Petra out of a funk. The three albums they did on that label were among their best in a while. Like it or not, J&H would not have turned out the way it did without Inpop and Peter Furler, specifically.

well....
They did a good job with Jekyll and Hyde (as far as making it goes) but there really wasn't any promotion that I could tell, so I guess I don't follow you.

Like it or not ccm is a well greased business machine. Every aspect has a hand that wants to be paid. In this business you are not going to get from point A to point B without a lable.
As a band who is tryin to work its way out of the basement I know that the festivals do not accept anything from bands - only lables. You can't get ANY distribution without a lable, and you've got to admit, Petra's cd's have been available - even at Wally world.
Now there are bands who start there own lables. Maybe John and Bob should have gone that way. But grim reality is that as far as promotion goes - you can't sell what isn't wanted.
CCM wants to remember Petra, not have them among their "latest and greatest".
I don't think Inpop is to blame.

I don't think so
I really don't think inpop really even tried. How can you say you can't sell what isn't wanted when serious promotion was not even tried? There is no basis to say that in this case. I can't tell you how many classic christian rock fans I came across when Jekyll and Hyde was released that were completely unware that Petra was releasing a new album. That does not tell me that people didn't want it, it's tells me people didn't know about it. What's more is that people certainly didn't realize that the album marked a return to hard rock for Petra. Many people who did hear Petra was releasing an album, looked the other way because they had been so unimpressed with the light, popish stuff that Petra had been putting out in recent years. There should have been a big bold promotion about all of this and it just wasn't there.
I'm not saying it's all inpops fault. Petra must take some blame themselves for doing the albums they did and then getting into another situation that did not allow them to do what they wanted to do the first time.
Still, it is what it is and I have to trust that this band is in God's hands and if he wanted them to continue, he would make a way for that to happen. Perhaps their end will serve some purpose that we are not aware of and we need to just trust that this too will accomplish God's purpose.

It makes little to no sense to point fingers. It doesn't matter. All the money in the world won't make a band happen in a market that is no longer buying.
I like what Josh wrote about the promoters wanting to work with new bands. Yeah. They like to bring them in for nothing when they are nobodies, then skip out on the check when they are somebody and making some serious jack, and then get you for nothing on the way back down from popularity.

Hi
Petra do not compromise.
Each day I am honored to be a pethead cause they go against all of this.
The had a serious legacy! So, I am sure they are under God's desire right now.
ALL THE CDS were excellent cause GOD PUT in their hearts. TRhe industry would have the same behaviour if they ha produced J&H in 1998 for example.
Lets pray for them...
There is not blame
There is ONE NAME TO BE GLORIFIED:
JESUS. AND I am sad cause I love PETRA which have blessed me along this many years. But I am happy cause I know that God still use them in His plans even with PETRA retirement.

I agree with Josh. Inpop really tried. No, they didn't get the push and budget of, say, Mercy Me or Jeremy Camp today, but to expect that is completely unrealistic. Inpop respected Petra and believed that Petra still could make their mark today. They DID market J&H to the best of their abilities.Kirkman wrote:Whoa, there, guys... Blame the lack of sales on the state of radio. Blame it on a smaller fanbase. Blame it on the realities of the overall market. Blame it on all sorts of things. But it's not accuate to say that Inpop did not market nor believe in the band.
