Kind of, but I'm not sure Groveshark is completely legal. Spotify is legal. Artists gets payed when their songs are played. With Spotify you have to create an account and download a program which is your player. (It can play local mp3 files as well). If you're not a paying member but have a "free" account, you will get commercials in between songs and only be able to use Spotify for 10 hours every month.

Ha. Artists get paid. .0003 of one cent per play. Pffft! That is why artists are suing and pulling their music, and why the service is going to be relaunched in a different form in the USA.

If you have the software, Spotify imports your files from your drives, and lists the songs for you. So if you do not like iTunes, and you want to have your music on the same playlist as the possible songs from Spotify's catalog, then it is cool. If you do not upgrade, you are forced to listen to advertisements between songs (edit...just noticed Boray said this). It is worth the money not to hear the ads IMO. I wish I could pay my cable provider for that.

At least I have no record company and will get 100% of my royalties myself... Will be interesting to see if I get anything at all...

If the picture I posted is correct, I would need 380 plays to get one dollar! If the album costs $10 to download, it would be equal to playing the whole album (all 11 tracks) 345 times on Spotify.

There are idiotic people that think giving away the music creates exposure and exposure = sales. It does not work. There are tons of people with music industry how-to books and videos. The general consensus is that downloads and streams should be teasers, medleys, etc but never complete songs. I agree. Now, some may notice that I posted complete PDC songs. Heck, almost the whole album is on SoundCloud. I gave up. I got tired of people stealing it and I got tired of fighting it. It consumed me. Nobody can beat the software of the torrents and I waved the white flag.

Walmart has a practice; buy low and sell high. They know that it is easier to lower prices than raising them. Giving something away for free in hopes of one day being able to charge people for it is just stupid. That is the most retarded logic ever.

The people that have been discovered on YouTube and the like, have not built longevity and wealth on their own. It takes a "tastemaker" like Jimmy Kimmel or Neal Schon, who have a mainstream media platform with an existing audience (and lots of money) to give them legs.

Edit: BTW, Songs are submitted to Spotify by companies artists use to submit songs for digital download. There are quite a few that offer these services. They essentially are a label with each digital download provider, and the artist gets in through the back door. TuneCore, CDBaby, etc, etc are examples. some of these services are packaged with CD pressing services. In some cases, there is no way to opt out using Spotify. If you are an indie artist, you have to use these types of submission services, because you do not have a major label/distribution deal.

What is Spotify more than just on-demand radio? I hear no one complain about Hulu and other on-demand tv websites. You take a subscription and the program makers get payed based on the amount of views. The same with Spotify. To avoid ads and get more listening time, people can take a paid subscription. I don't know why you're complaining. The world is changing. Those free subscriptions with Spotify are teaser subscriptions to get people to take a paid subscription.

To the end user they might appear to be the same, but Hulu and the like have licensing agreements with the studios/networks, and there is more money changing hands. Contracts for television talent, producers, engineers, etc are very different. In TV and movies. The second is the unit of compensation, not the song, album of ten songs, etc. That stuff is more involved. I can assure you that the networks, various guilds and unions, etc are ALL getting paid. Spotify is paying waaaaaaay below the market average (which is low enough) and they are not cutting the checks. This is why they are getting sued. They do not have the best accounting services and they do not pay. There is a sales threshold they set before they pay. They bank on indies with no money not coming after them. After all, they are doing the indies a favor. Right.

But does radio really pay more than Spotify for a played song if you count in the millions of listeners? Still, I have never heard any complaints of being played on radio.

I think Spotify is a great idea but it should pay a bit more per play. If you buy a CD, how many times do you listen to it in your life time? The streaming fees should be based on an average of that or something.

There, you can opt in and out any of the networks including Spotify. I selected all of them to get maximum exposure. They don't take any percentage of the royalties either or have ongoing annual fees like other services such as CD Baby. But they have a higher one time fee instead.

Radio does pay more, and you have a rep that knows who is playing, when and there is some form of response. Radio drives charts which drives sales. All of this costs money though. Indie and indie distributed music will never sell big numbers like labeled/distributed/rep'd music will. It all takes money to make money.

Recently a local band here in KC paid $50k per show to open A list bands in a festival. This band will have radio airplay and will sell because someone is laying out the cash.

How much will an artist like Journey get per play when one of their older tunes is played on radio vs lets say their new single "City of Hope" which was a medium hit? On the same note what about Petra or in this case John because "Hope That Saves the World" is in heavy rotation right now and getting alot of request?

As a user, I love Spotify. Especially since I signed up for the free premium trial version (ad free and can use it on my iPhone), and they seem to have forgotten that I still have it four months later!

I love being able to merge my own mp3s with stuff I've always wanted to buy but didn't have the money/time/energy to buy/track down.

But I can totally see how it screws over the artists despite being completely legal. My thought is: I'm not buying the stuff anyway (the aforementioned lack of dollars), so this is a win-win: I get to listen, and they get paid.

Metallica, which as we all probably know, is very tight with the access they allow for their songs (as they should be), is not on Spotify, and neither are a few albums from Iced Earth, so there are at least still some bands and labels avoiding the service.
