I've been to many Randy Stonehill and Phil Keaggy concerts; they are still around but as Spott pointed out they haven't gotten a lot of recognition from CCM. These guys do have to make a living, it can be tricky finding a balance.
Yeah, I like Ryan's post too, Charl, and he said it better than I could too.

Three things that killed Petra
1. Radio: If your not a minivan mom CCM radio could careless who you are.
2. Message: Petra would not water down their message(which I give them credit for) I hate CCM for what it has become. I wonder what God thinks about this.
3. Music Styles: Petra tried to change and become more relevant in this area and it hurt them severly. I believe No Doubt was the turning point and was the biggest mistake they have ever done. I don't even own No Doubt any longer because of the distaste it brings to my ears. It was NOT Petra in anyway shape or form.

Neither did
Double Take.

Phil is amazing. He's playing with (well, the same stage as) Petra August 13 in Muskeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeegon. I think I like No Doubt and Double Take only because I knew they were departures from what Petra had done in the past. I wasn't expecting to hear This Means War or Beyond Belief. Say what you will about No D and Double T, they resonated with me in different ways than 87-93 did. I love 'em.

I think CCM radio is missing the boat on the whole "soccer moms don't want to rock and roll" think. Last weekend we went to see Herbie Fully Loaded, and you know what music was on the soundtrack? 70's and 80's rock and roll! Van Halen, Loverboy, Steppenwolf. There's other stuff there too, like the obligatory Lindsey Lohan song and some beach music classics, but my point is this: DISNEY, the ultimate marketer to kids and their parents (matched but not exceeded by McDonald's) knows that "soccer moms" are not afraid of the rock music they grew up with. CCM needs to get a clue about the same thing. The top mainstream pop station in town that caters to that crowd plays 80's rock and pop between current (sorta) hits... not metal, but pop and poppy rock. Just exactly what a lot of Petra's music in the 80's was.

Yep and since CCM radio is nothing but a 3 year delayed knee-jerk reaction to the seculatr world, then they will likely miss the boat on the music coming back into style.
It makes me sick! Literally. Thanks God they won't be programming music in the new heaven and new earth. Take that any way you want to.

There have been no good Christian movies ever. Any Christian movies would be so desparate to be hip, they'd throw all the Christian "heavy hitters" at the soundtrack, SCC, 3D, Katinas, etc, and, if they needed the money, U2.
I know, I know...I saw The Passion. That was ok, but all the Catholic and extemporaneous imagery kind of sunk it for me.

Yeah, even these movies that the TBN brothers have made have looked pretty shabby. I realize that the gospel doesn't need to be packaged to be effective. The Holy Spirit is bigger than us or our efforts. But, if you want joe-shmoe, average lost guy movie goer to see a movie that will rock his world, or atleast have the appearance that it will, then they better be looking at something like a Star Wars for effects, and then have really good actors. Not corn balls that can't make it in the real world, so they became Christians, just to blow their "testimony" on a reality show with hell bound reprobates.

Saw Charlie and the Chocolate Factory today. The oompa-loompas keep singing songs that sound like the 80's. Come to think of it, they kind of LOOK like the 80's, too.

This is exactly how I am, although I do buy new CDs, I get more excited about the older stuff I listened to when I was growing up.

The Elefonte's and others are seeing the writing on the wall. Stryper is blazing the trail and other will follow suit to bring back the music that we, the people that have money now (35-40 yr olds) want to here.
I really hope that's true. In my opinion, the best Petra by far came by way of the Elefante's. The Elefante's, in my opinion, were the best producers - ever - in Christian music. I'm still hoping for another Petra/Elefante project - and who knows - they could always come back and do a studio release later on even after "retirement". Especially if the trend Brent is referring to continues to pave the way.

So does this mean that when I am 40 I will look back and my favorite music will be 35-40 years old? Its hard enough to believe that my favorite recording (Beyond Belief) is 15 years old. I sure do hope the old styles come back.
