Why don't you like the two U2 albums, I felt like it return them to form from what they were putting out in the 80's. All 90's albums were horrible.

Some really good songs on All That You Can't Leave Behind, but not enough. "Beautiful Day" is excellent; "Elevation," and "Walk On" are other songs I kinda like. The rest of the stuff on that album is just bubblegum. "Wild Honey" - bubblegum. "Kite" - bubblegum. "Peace on Earth" - also bb-gum. "When I Look Upon the World" - if it were faster, it would sound better. "Grace" - a depressing end to the album.

Zooropa ain't too good either, though I do like the title track and the beautiful Joshua Tree-esque ballad (The First Time). However, the last song on Zooropa (the wanderer) is awful; even though Johnny Cash lends his awesome voice to it, the song has cheesy techno bass sounds. "Numb" just makes your hair stand on end - it's like nails on a chalkboard. "Baby Face" is cheesy as can be. So, Zooropa has more bad than good, but not too much bad for me to put it on the no-no list.

Achtung Baby: though it's disappointing compared to any of the 80's albums, it's got plenty of cool funky stuff and nice rhythms. "Even Better than the real thing," "Until the End of the World, and "Mysterious Ways," - great songs!!! Some really stupid sound effects in places, though, such as those two whining noises in "Zoo Station" and the eh-oohh-rrrhh thing at the beginning of the fifth song (Wild Horses). The last song (Love is Blindness) is terrible; it has cool bass sound, but the guitar doesn't harmonize enough, leaving you with empty chords. "One," "So Cruel," and "Tryin' to Throw Your Arms" are the kinds of songs you just can't wait for them to end, or you skip over them. They're boring. But at least more than half of Achtung Baby is worth listening to.

Pop - I don't even remember what it sounds like. I just remember that the entire album just plain zucked. (What was U2 thinking???) Worse than All That You Can't Leave Behind, that's for sure. And why do they think it's cool to use so many cuss words?? That's just idiotic.

Now for the infamous Atomic Bomb: more bubblegum. The only GOOD song is "City of Blinding Lights." The song "Crumbs from Your Table" has a cool piano sound, but not enough musical highlights in that song. "Vertigo" kicks off the album with speed, but it's kinda a lame song. Too much of that slothly, slow, boring krap that we've found on every album since '91. ("One Step Closer," and "Original of the Species" for example.) "Love and Peace or Else" is loaded with cheesiness. Plus, Bono's voice is giving out from old age and he doesn't sound as good as he used to. His voice even cracks in places.

I agree with you that the 80's stuff exceeds the 90's stuff in quality, but sorry Executioner - I don't think the 2000's stuff is any better than the 90's stuff. Maybe a little worse, even.

Torment Me by playing "I Can Only Imagine" again!

Post by seichu kaisho » Mon Jul 04, 2005 1:22 pm

I don't like anything I've heard by Sonicflood. Resonate was a rather pathetic attempt at an album

Mercy Me's stuff is . . . well, let's just say I cry out for mercy whenever I hear a Mercy Me song.

Seichu you did not even mention the best 2 songs on HTDAAB. Miracle Drug and All because of You. Crumbs, Vertigo, and Sometimes You Can't Do It On Your Own are are also highlights. What U2 did in the 80's was special, but can never be duplicated. Even Bono has said they have no desire to go back. In fact they are saying that some of the old favs will no longer be played live; They are really focusing on this release and plan on doing 7-9 of the songs during the tour. These are better then what was in the 90's because these songs off the last 2 releases have alot of the same qualities from what made them popular in the 80's.

"Miracle Drug" and "All Because of You" are okay songs - better than much of the other stuff on that album. Although I don't incredibly like any of the songs, those two, plus "Vertigo" and "City of Blinding Lights" are the best.

If I gave Atomic Bomb another listen, I'd probably say, "this stuff isn't too bad - it's nice sounding, even. But it's just doesn't excite me." I don't think Atomic Bomb is a terrible album; but it's not awesome either.

Interesting topic!

White Heart, Emergency Broadcast: Just nothing memorable about it. I love every other one of their albums, and I can only remember one song on it, "No Taboo."

Collective Soul, Disciplined Breakdown: Same kind of thing, no breakthroughs, no hooks, just kind of a get from point A (Hints) to my favorite, point B (self-titled).

The Choir, Flap Your Wings: Lots of sonic experimentation, which is ok in small doses, but too much here. A departure from what made me fall in love with them (the No Doubt effect).

U2, Pop: I agree with you guys...lots of just garbage to me. 1990-2000 existed in miniscule doses with U2 for me.

Live, Birds of Pray: I thought it was kind of mailed in, and the song "Heaven" was so close, and yet, so far from a spiritual turning point.

I have never really listened to Collective Soul; Give me some ideas on how they sound, and also who would you compare them too.

Seichu,

Keep in mind that I am not saying Atomic Bomb is their best. It's not, but I think they have gotten alot better from what happen in the 90's. I am glad they are at least playing something that is in my vein music style wise.

Yu kan kal me "Sama-yaki"

Hey, it's all right exe :D

I respect your opinion. I'm just sharing mine because I enjoy sharing my thoughts as much as you do. You're entitled to your own opinions and so are all of us, and I don't think your worse than me just because we have different preferences in music. But we should probably put this discussion aside before it becomes a catfight just like the Bush thread  (P.S. thank you so much Matthew RJ for adding so much excitment to the Petra Zone)

There are some who put the Revival album on their top 5 favorites list, and I don't see why because Revival is one of my least favorite Petra albums. But do I think these people s uck just because they love Revival? No. Do I think lowly of Lexington Pethead just because he likes Audio A's Worldwide? Non.

And you all can call me "Yamasaki" if you want - I like it better than "seichu".

I would compare Collective Soul to Pearl Jam without the pretense, Creed-lite on prozac, ...just really 90's rock/pop, ie Soul Asylum, Live, Bush, Matchbox Twenty, Sister Hazel, and so on. Petra's No Doubt/God Fixation style stuff, but a step above it in my opinion.
