Soul2Soul Honors in Louisville

Post by calicowriter » Wed Aug 17, 2005 10:12 am

OK, I've been hating to bring this up but feel like I should...

For those of you going to the Soul2Soul Honors in Louisville August 26th, are you aware that Petra is only scheduled to perform 2 songs? When I emailed them on another matter, I asked and that's what they said. However, they asked if I "would be disappointed if Petra only performed 2 songs." I replied and said yes and that I thought people were expecting more since it is being advertised as Petra's last appearance in the area. Maybe it wouldn't hurt to email them and request Petra perform a few more songs, even if they aren't taped for broadcast. ([email protected]) Of course since Petra is getting an award, they probably aren't getting paid for this gig, and may not want to perform much.

I knew they wouldn't be performing many songs, but I thought they would do at least 3.

Oh well, the money's paid and I'm still a happy guy.

That's why I'm taking the long drive to Grove City, OH and/or Ft. Wayne, IN so I can see a full show.

I just bought my ticket today... I didn't expect a full show by any means... but only 2 songs??? Are they crazy???

I spoke with one of the Family Christian Stores in Louisville (that sold me my ticket), and I asked the guy if they expect this concert to sell out. He said (and I quote), "It's Petra's last time in Louisville, and it could easily sell out by next week." This, of course, from someone who probably couldn't care less if Petra was there or not.

I agree with Bridget -- people are expecting more than just 2 songs. I'm going anyway... I probably won't stay long after... unless I can meet the guys after the show.

I'm going to send an email to the address Bridget posted.

Rockon, which is closer - Grove City, OH or Fort Wayne, IN?

Where do you get tickets, and do you have the dates?

I know you didn't ask me, but from Lexington, Grove City is much closer than Ft. Wayne. From Louisville, it's pretty close, but Grove City is about 20 miles closer.

However, Ft. Wayne would be a great place to see your last Petra concert since that is where it all began over 33 years ago. You might even get to meet a couple of the original members of Petra, right Jen?

Whose all planning on attending the Soul2Soul Honors in Louisville? I'm not sure when I'll get there, but I'm planning on getting there early. I'll be by myself, so if anyone sees me, let me know you're from the Zone. (I guess everyone knows what I look like).

Yes, it was a fun night. I was pleasantly surprised and touched by all of the performances at the Soul2Soul Honors show last night in Louisville. Newsong was awesome, as were Randy Stonehill, Bryan Duncan and Louisville's own, Larnelle Harris. Thankfully for me, Out of Eden didn't perform and Jaci Velazquez was tolerable (I don't care much for women pop singers). But, Petra was indded who most were there to see. And Johnathan, you weren't alone in getting emotional during the intro. They showed every Petra album cover and played about 5 seconds of a song off of it. It was cool to hear the roars for songs like "This Means War" and "The Noise We Make", but the biggest cheers came when Jeckyll & Hyde came on the big projection screen. When John turned around and the lights came up and Petra started "Beyond Belief", you could tell that he was really touched by the moment. While onstage you could see him alternate between loving the audience and loving his Lord. Awesome.

You could see that the band thoroughly enjoyed the crowd and the memories. Bob spoke a bit when they got their awards, then they did "Lord I Lift Your Name on High." After tons of cheers and applause, they came back out and did "When Will The World See That We Need Jesus" with John and Gregg taking turns at lead vocals. (Gregg has an excellent singing voice, BTW.)

I sort of "dragged" my roommate to the concert; she didn't mind going, but wasn't all that excited about it either. She left saying she was really glad she was part of it, and that she couldn't wait to see a full Petra show! :D Mission accomplished!

That sounds pretty cool. Many times when someone is dragged somewhere they'll be glad later they went. :D Greg does have a good voice, he did very well singing back up when I saw them in Oceanside. There have been a lot of Petra members with good voices...Johnny Lawry, Jim Cooper and Ronny Cates all have good voices. They all sort of took a back seat to the lead singer.

I went in thinking I really wouldn't get much out of it except for getting to see Petra. I really was surprised by how much I enjoyed everyone who performed. The amazing talent we saw from everyone who took the stage was unbelieveable. No one had an off-night. Newsong was awesome. Randy Stonehill was meticulously flawless on his accoustic guitar and very entertaining, Bryan Duncan was a pitch-perfect as always. I really wasn't all too impressed with Jaci Valesquez, although she did a great job, I'm just not into that sort of style, I guess.

But people went absolutely nuts when they got to Petra. I started getting teary-eyed when they first went on stage. I got really choked-up during the album tribute Bridget was describing.

I'm telling you what, though... Petra was in absolute TOP form. I was completely taken away with how great everything sounded. If anyone has had any doubt about this version of Petra being able to pull it off big time with a live performance, I assure you, they did so effortlessly. As good as everyone else was, Petra was far better, and you sensed it the moment they took the stage. When Petra went off-stage after only 2 songs, I went bizerk, as well as plenty of others. Then they came back with everyone else and did "We Need Jesus". I just about completely lost it.

The greatest moment of the night was when I met up with Rockon and SolidStrength and we found Petra in one of the back rooms for a photo session... SolidStrength asked the guy there in charge to let the guys know there were 3 Petheads out there that would like to have their pictures taken with them, and they let us in! That's me in the yellow polo shirt beside John, SolidStrength is in the middle in the Petra T-Shirt, and Rockon is on the other side of Bob.

It's me again...

Post by RockOn » Sat Aug 27, 2005 8:18 pm

Hey...

who's that geeky looking guy in the blue and white striped shirt hanging with all the cool members of Petra and some friendly Zone PetHeads?

Why, that's ME!

What can I say about last night? The award ceremony was great...the performers awesome...meeting up with other PetHeads like Calicowriter, SRS, LexingtonPethead and Tutor23 (all except for Johnathan whom I couldn't find) was truly a highlight...and actually getting to talk with the artists topped it all off!

But, who would I say the best overall performance went to last night?

Hmmm...now let me see...(scratches head)...Jaci V.?...noooo...why it was
PETRA OF COURSE! SolidRockStrength, his wife and I were in the second row from the stage--almost dead center!

The majority of the crowd definitely seemed like they were there to see our boys. And they DID NOT disappoint! I'm pretty sure the guys could feel the love coming from the crowd. They got every bit of respect that they deserved, but gave it completely to the glory of God. AND THAT'S WHAT MAKES PETRA--PETRA! There will never be another group exactly like them.

So did I tear up at the point in the program where they played Petra's album montage and song clips? You'd better believe it! In fact, I feel a bit  right now.

So whaddaya say guys and gals? Grove City, OH and/or Ft. Wayne? I'll be there...and I hope you are too. They'll need a bunch of us CRAZY PETHEADS to cheer them on (until we lose our voices) into a well deserved rest.

Take care, God bless and Petra rocks,
RockOn!

By the way Johnathan, I'm sorry we couldn't find you. It would have been great to see the ultrasound of your little one. Maybe we'll catch you at one of the other shows. We'll need to get a picture of you sometime so we can find you at these events. That's how I recognized LexingtonPethead. :)
