licensing for Judas Kiss
My band wants to record Judas Kiss for our new studio project. I'm not sure who has the liscense for that - BMI, ASCAP, CCLI?
Who do you contact first to get permission?
If anyone knows definitavely, please let me know!

I had to break out my daughters glasses to read the sub microscopic, poorly scanned CD liner. It revealed no mention of ASCAP or BMI. Email Bob. He wrote the words and music. If you get no response, Email Richard Greene at EMI. He can get you started in the right direction.
It's gonna be like 8 cents a CD or something I bet.
It isn't going to be CCCLI. That is a completely different monster.

They will likely ask you how many discs you are going to sell, when and where, etc. The idea is to feel you out (usually). They should get a proof a copy, etc. It is normally a royalty paid per copy sold. You will have to registed the product with Neilson Soundscan, os that they can track it, if you are selling in the US. If it is outside of the US, you will likely be asked for a flat fee, as they have no way to track sales.
Paying per copy is better for you, especially if you have returns. That keeps you from paying royalties on discs that you didn't make and/or lost money on.
I could be completely wrong. They could want more or less. I just gave you what I have had to pay for songs in the past, from artists bigger than Petra.

Thanks for the info! It is really helpful.
I have heard of soundscan before, but will they be able to track cash sales at concerts? Is this something I have to report?
We will likely be doing small runs on production (1000 or fewer) and will have no distribution outside of our website, and shows.

In otherwords if this guy happened to sell 500k copies of this CD Bob would get $62,500 in his pocket?

If we sold 500k copies of our cd, I wouldn't feel right NOT giving Bob his "due".
I'm sure Bob, and really most artists, could put evena few thousand $$ to good use if they could find a way to collect it.
Just 'cause the band is over doesn't mean the music they made can't still be lucrative.
Just ask M.J. He was able to bankroll an acuital (sp?) off of his ownership of Beatle tunes.
