I think that people call themselves "Christian" in the way Lex encountered because they ascribe to the judeo-Christian worldview. Good life leads to paradise in the afterlife. Or because they are not Muslim, Hindu or (in the word of Reverend Lovejoy) "miscellaneous." I think thats how she would rationally justify that. Because "Christian" rarely jives with "Democrat" in my opinion.

For those here who may not be familiar with all things American... the rainbow sticker refers to being gay or homosexual. That's often how gay people identify each other.

I think the biggest problem with the polarization of politics along religious lines both in Canada and the US, is that the state is increasingly trying to infringe on the domain of the church on the left side of the spectrum. And then the chuch is wrong because it won't back off. Very problematic.
I often wonder what Tommy Douglas would think of the fact that christians are now pretty much being forced to the right side of the spectrum. The only other option for us now is a type of Regalism.

I don't get this. Especially since Canada is still part of the commonwealth...or were those who wrote the verse really that ignorant of how our country was formed? Yes, Queen Elizabeth is the Queen of Canada-this is one of her titles. This seems to be something that many Americans find hard to understand. And I won't forget the British man,
Who sold this land to me

Oh I also have to add; the fact is that currently both the right and the left are made up of conservatives. The proper political split is not between conservative and liberal, but between conservative and progressive. Conservatives come in all stripes, depending on what it is they want to conserve. And in many cases, liberalism (which is now over a hundred years old) is in one form or another, the old guard. They wish to stay the course they've been on all this time. Hardly progressive.
In fact (and this is scary!
) the neo-conservatives are increasingly becoming the voice of change.

Just in case I was misunderstood...
My Canadian rendition of "Proud To Be An American" was not meant to be taken seriously and I only threw it in there because it fit with the theme of the thread. I don't necessarily agree with what it says, I just found it wildly amusing.

I think its a great idea to bring the troops home, all good would come from that.
I predict it will be a new era of understanding between the Shiites and the Sunni. They can work out their differences amicably. Then we can depend on the UN to come in and make sure everything is on the up-and-up, as they have no room for dishonesty. Then America will trudge home, tail between its legs, embarrassed, powerless in the world. Then China and Russia will take over as the co-world powers! Hooray! They will smite the evil Americans and anyone who sided with them. Peace and harmony will prevail, since China and Russia clearly have a better grasp of humanity and goodness than we do, plus they really have no military to speak of, just a lot of gardeners and hockey players. Then they will forget their hatred of religion, and, coincidentally, Islam extremists will drop their Jihad against the infidels who liberated them from Democratic tyranny.

You know, in a perfect world, ALL of our troops would be here, waiting to defend our borders, but we all know it isn't a perfect world, and mistakes from the past tend to hang around to torture us again. Mistakes are made in every administration, and you have to hope and pray that the administration in power has the wisdom to deal with them correctly. Time will tell the tale. However, to all these people who keep insisting that President Bush must set a timeline for getting out of Iraq, I say, as soon as our troops are out of Korea, Germany, Guam, Cuba, etc, etc, THEN we'll worry about pulling out of the current hotspot.

It's funny,
I consider myself an independant. I'm conservative and I'm registered as a republican. I can think for myself and yes I would even vote for a Democrat...............
The day I see a Democrat who stands for the same morals that I hold true and dear. The day I hear a Democrat say and (do) things that show christian fruit instead of just trying to save thier political hide by saying "I'm a Christian" when it's conveient.
I will vote Democrat when someone upholds the democracy they speak of and is willing to fight for it. I will take a gun slinging, horse riding, Suv driving, oil company working, making the rest of the world feel uncomfortable because they make decisions based on their convictions and Christian beliefs instead of giving a fly's patoot about what anyone else says who isn't willing to change things themselves, world policing cause most of these countries want to but can't do it on their own, George Bush anyday of the week that ends in (Y).
Instead of a whining, no spine, complain after the fact, waffling, point the finger at everyone else yet make no clear cut decision themselves, claim that Bush's plan is wrong and worthless, yet not have no plan of their own, would sit back and give control to the UN and be proud to bow to world pressure and be real fools instead of people's opinions saying we are, losing touch with reality and how a majority of people really feel in the US, did I mention whining? Hollywood pleasing, claim to be for the working man yet haven't made any change in years to help the working man, doomsday predicting, bleeding heart liberal Democrat!
And that's what it comes down to. Most people I know who claim to be democrats are really uninformed Republicans. I stood up in a meeting a couple of weeks ago in a room full of Democrats and started talking about the way this country should be including our City of Flint, MI. (Yes Micheal Moore's home town) I never once brought up republican or democrat yet I recieved a standing ovaision and everyone agreed with me! Why? Because the liberal way of doing things doesn't make sense when you actualy look at it.
People vote Democrat because their Dad and grampa was a Democrat and said Democrats are for the working man and down troden. Problem is that the modern day democratic party isn't for the working man. They are riding the coat tails of the past as they quietly work the "New Agenda"
Flint, MI has been run by democrats for as long as I can remember, yet it hasn't done a bit of good for our City as some of you have seen. Democrats in power, yet it must be some far off republican who is causing all of the problems right?
Who cares if the world supports our efforts in Iraq? Should it matter if it's popular or not. Don't even be the next person to (cough) bring up Viet Nam. The two have nothing in common other than being wars. With all the those who have died in Iraq, it is tragic. Consider the actual amount of casualties though. We aren't even close for Pete's sake.
Nobody's perfect. Not Bush, not Clinton, not Bush 1, not even Reagan. (Although close) ha But it is rediculous that people can't get over the fact that we support our president and our county and believe the cause is just.
GET OVER IT! In love

Canada also fought in Korea. No wonder they call it the 'forgotten war'. And judging by the horrors that are going on in North Korea as compared to South Korea, they were not necessarily wrong in getting involved.
Canada is a weird country I hafta tell ya. We have great battle heros in our past, we still have some of the best trained soldiers on a shoestring budget, other countries honour us for our contributions in war, our country found it's voice in war...and yet I think we now are ashamed of that. Whether one supports a particular war or not, does not mean all wars are wrong, or can even be avoided.
I'm also interested in how the oil-for-food thing influenced the UN's decision against the Iraq war. People no longer say much about the fact that the UN was against it since that broke.
As for the democrat/republican; I love taking online quizzes, and there are some out there about American political parties-where one would fit.
I usually end up as a centrist or no affiliation, but if not I land on the side of democrat-usually a 'conservative democrat' (but see my above post heh). Most who would be called 'conservative democrats' are not necessarily mis-informed, they usually believe that the government should be more involved in people's lives than a Republican. For me, this just comes from being from Saskatchewan.
Don't forget though, this party seems to have changed greatly in the last number of years, and I think there are probably many of the older type of democrats who are simply holding on for dear life.

Yeah, liberal democrats have been promising to take of the down-trodden, poor, and minorities for what, 5 decades or more? Yet, The problem hasn't gone away and social programs in those areas are bigger than ever. In many poorer communities the problem has only gotten worse.
Howard Dean was the latest figure to attack Bush for not having a plan. He was then asked if he had a plan of his own. His answer: He was not in the president's position and didn't have enough intelligence to develop a plan. If he doesn't know what good plan is, how is he qualified to say whether or not the president has one. He wouldn't recognize a plan if he was staring at it.
BTW- whatever happened to the discussion about the original post? As soon as real discussion started the thread suddently dies out. Hmmm. Seems to make my original, point!
