New Songs

Post by BForm » Tue Sep 20, 2005 12:02 am

As I said before, I think a few of them would be a good idea. We'd all love to hear something new and I do think it would help sell the new album.

Brent, I agree with you that radio is declining rapidly and Petra isn't likely to get much support. However, we have a station in the Atlanta area that plays every single as they are released. WWEV (91.5) is one station that has always supported Petra and knows they have a big fan base in the Atlanta area. The other station, which I loathe (104.7 The Flesh....Uh, I mean the Fish), only started playing Lord I lift Your Name.....after a lot of complaining by Petra fans. There has never been another Petra song played on that station.

I'm sure there are other stations as well that would support them, especially if they released one in the AC format, or whatever it's called now. In any case, I'm sure it would help sales somewhat.

The other option for Bob's new material is for John to do them on a new solo album. I know I'll take some heat for this, but I've never thought John's solo projects were anywhere close to the same standards as Petra. I'm not talking only about the production, but primarily the songwriting. He has some great songs, but others that I think should have never been recorded. In the end, putting substandard songs on an album with a few great ones is not the way to sell discs. Certainly the association between his name and Petra had a lot to do what success those projects did have.

O.K., fire away.

I'm happy that there will be a last CD/DVD. I live in Sydey Australia, so i won't have the priveledge to see them live again.

It's kinda weird for me though...my first petra experience was the CITAS live recording, and now to close the chapter, i will hear the last of petra in a live recording.

I'm happy but I cant imagine John is totally happy with all of this. Dont get me wrong, I'm sure he's not fuming but first, he said he didnt want to share the stage with Greg Volz and he also said he wanted to do the live cd to reward Paul and Greg for their efforts. Well, if Louie shows up, it will only take away from Paul. Just a thought and a prayer that all goes well ...

No, John's actually cool with it all... I talked with him last night, and he's fine with it.

And, thanks to Bridget's Taxi Service and a great last-minute deal from Midwest Airlines, I too will make the trip down. After all these years, it's about TIME I head to Nashvegas - even if it's only for a day!

OK, I'll give you some heat and I'll say I totally disagree! John had some of the best studio musicians and writers - in fact, a few tunes were penned by Petra members/affiliates. What songs are you thinking shouldn't have been made?

Yep, Sue and I are going to rock that town, right Sue?

OK, lets gang up on BForm and beat him senseless! ;) Just kidding.

But seriously, I think Johns solo records are excellent. John probably could not afford Dann Huff anymore, now that hes producing the likes of Keith Urban, and the other musicians were/are well known session players. As for the quality of the songs themselves, yes, they are different from Bob/Petra songs, but that was the whole idea. Bobs songs are more directly scripture-based, instructional almost. Johns songs reflect more emotion what he has on his heart. That is not to say that some of the songs Bob writes dont do the same thing, but I would think that when you are in a situation of ministry that is as personal as Johns is, it is nice to be able to say exactly what you want to say. While Johns voice is probably his greatest musical talent, Im glad that he is more than just a guy that sings someone elses songs.

Re; John's Albums

I actually thought Unfit for Swine was a progressive album in a direction Petra should have gone. Its actually one of my favs.

Hmm I'm in Orlando when the Live recording goes down, I could sneak away for the day, fly up, leave kids with wife....and be divorced by morning.

Oh well, the DVD will have to do. :D

Unfit for Swine would have been a terrible direction for Petra to go in. It's bad enough that John did it. Petra ventured to far into the modern rock direction the way it was.

well, that depends on the station and the length of the song. Our station here in PA plays a lot of live stuff. Granted, it's praise and worship, but there's not much else in terms of live stuff. They played stuff from J&H when it first came out, so they certainly would play something new if it was released.

I'm not sure if I can swing the 15 mile drive...

Looks like fun and if it only means working a few extra hours at my lemonade stand... I may just end up loitering at the gig...

And the W is a WAY cool venue in Cool Springs... very close to the Galleria...

There seem to be alot of "IFs" in regards to Petra and Inpop....

I sure hope you do get to go, Elo- I'm praying!

Ten lashes with a wet Pethead t-shirt for YOU!! Yes, it was a definite step into 'uncharted territory' for John, but he pulled it off and I for one love this album - and no, I'm not into modern rock at all.
