Creed, He Came, He Saw, He Conquered Question
Creed, He Came, He Saw, He Conquered Question
I have learned that the Apostles creed is unbiblical. Specifically the line that says Jesus descended and set the captives free. Jesus didnt descend to hell freeing us then rise. Jesus never went to hell. He fought many temptation by satan here on earth. However he didnt go to hell.
He died on the cross at that moment we were free. Then was put into the tomb and on the 3rd day he rose to Heaven
The same goes for he came he saw he conquered. He didnt conguere hell. He defeated satan on Jesus turf not in hell....
Unless by hell it means he conguered satan
In Christ

Sometimes I think when he says he went to hell he is talking about the cross. Also where did Jesus' soul go when he died on the cross? It was gone from the earth for three days correct?

FORGIVE! FORGET! & LET GO!
Reply:
"Creed" never says He went to hell - the payment for our sins was complete when He said "It is Finished!." It says " He descended and set the captives free."
1 Peter 3
18For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
19By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;
20Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.
21The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:
22Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.
"He, He Saw..." says "He conquered death and hell" not that he went to hell as payment for our sins - that was finished on the cross.
Col. 2
13And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
14Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
15And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.
Note: Jesus has the keys to death, hell, and the grave!!!
Rev. 1
18I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.

well
about Him descending it could that "He was up there in Heaven and DESCENDED to earth" to set us free.
there`s a part on the new testament where it says Jesus went to hell, I can`t remember it right now but I promise I`ll look for it.
and when it says He conquered death and hell I understand it that all of us were going to hell but Jesus by dying on the cross conquered death and hell, those have no more power over us, now we don`t have to go to hell, Jesus took the hell keys and now their power is over. that`s how i see it.

According to some, He did free those who had died before in Abraham's bossom (paradise). Those are the ones that he took to heaven. So, those I believe are the captives.
Jesus Christ did not go to hell to be in torment, or suffer. The translation is "debt paid in full, it is finished". Then he said "into Thy hands do I commit my Spirit." If he was in the Father's hands, then he most assuredly did not go to hell for punishment.

go to hell
You know, I don't know that we can absolutely say that. It sounds good, but what about:brent wrote:Then he said "into Thy hands do I commit my Spirit." If he was in the Father's hands, then he most assuredly did not go to hell for punishment.
And:Psalm 139:7-8 wrote:Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.
So taken literally as they read there (all Hell/Gehenna/Sheol/Grave/etc. arguments aside), God DOES exist in Hell, and he IS capable of personally punishing someone.Hebrews 12:5-6 wrote:And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: for whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.

The idea of 'decended to Hell' is usually interpreted as the suffering of the cross and death itself. It is also the latest part of the formulation to be standardised.
Here is Calvin's take on it. He also mentions some of the other explanations given for the phrase (though he does not agree with them).

Re: go to hell
The point that David is making is that no matter where he goes, God is with them. It is not so much a verse of his destiny, but the security he has in God.Michael wrote:You know, I don't know that we can absolutely say that.
