hired guns still upset people?

Post by beak » Sun Oct 23, 2005 1:31 am

So the hired guns is so terrible? Never been in a band before or what? Hired guns is not disrepectful but I guess alot of people believe that it is. I apologize that you are so upset for my comment, not disrespectful to me but it must be for others, I am sorry. I am also sorry I don't prefer the album artwork also, I'm sure there will be a few pages of something inside I will like also. I'm sure I will like the recording since I liked the show live in Dixon Il. The sound of the guitars was the J&H sound for all the songs and that was a plus. Yes it is the inside that counts but the dress or cover not all people will like either, you may not like leather, I may like lace, you may not like long hair, I may like it down to my knees. Like Josh said before that this is a forum for debate, so I guess I'm not out of line, except to some. Hey I'm a Pethead and I have my own opinion. I'm not exactly so thankful I'm getting a "new" album but it is nice to have something in the end. It will seem wierd that Petra is retired. Doesn't it seem odd to people that the cover is so plain? Doesn't it seem like someone just hurried up the job and said, "hey just put the last four Petra members bowing with "Farewell" above them, that's good enough" Why can we not debate artwork? There's not much left here to actually talk about in the last few days. At least I haven't asked if anyone wanted to name my baby or anything? Or if I knew someone that could be there girlfriend that likes Petra. Not that any of that is bad or anything. I'm actually laughing at myself if you can believe that! I dont' think the subjects here are bad or anything like that, I'm just kind of wierd like the rest of you!

Peter Kriss at the time he left KISS had ownership rights, maybe he wasn't an original owner but did buy some rights at some time after that. Also Oz Fox in no way shape or form have any type of ownership rights in Stryper. I remember when Mike quit Stryper in '92 Oz, Robert, and Tim wanted to continue and did a whole tour without Mike and because the tour was somewhat successful wanted to continue and make another album, but could not because Mike would not sell his share of ownership rights to Oz and Tim so Hollywood Records said no deal. CCM had a big article about it and really made Stryper look like they had gone off the deep end. So Beak if you believe what you say than Oz Fox and all those others I mention are hired guns and I think that is really far off.

I like the album cover in some ways and in other ways I don't. I've never been a big believer of having the band members on the cover, but maybe they will have an alternate cover on the inside flap like they did on No Doubt. I use the inside flap for my cover on No Doubt.

The cover's vintage design doesn't really seem to match the colors in my opinion. I'd like to see some more red and white in it. It looks like an 80's album cover.

One thing we can agree on ...MAYBE

Post by js3971 » Sun Oct 23, 2005 8:54 pm

The picture that the Johnathon uses in the post previous to mine should NOT be the album cover picture. I think that's something we all can agree on. MAYBE! Then again, this is the Pethead sounding board...

hired guns, still

Post by beak » Sun Oct 23, 2005 11:37 pm

So me stating Gene Simmons owning Kiss and this Styper thing means what? I stated that there were two hired guns on the album cover or something like that, maybe that means to some that they are full fledged members and to others it means hired musicians to play live. I liked the two latest members don't get me wrong, it was just kind of getting old that everytime I saw Petra there would be a new band, and I saw them almost every year that they came near me and I think I've seen just about every band member and that is alot. I don't believe that every person that played in Petra should be considered a member, that drummer that they had for a few shows during J&H, that is what I would not consider a member but a fill in. I have seen like four bassist in the last five years also, one was a pastor or something that I think only played a few shows that some people probably never saw or heard of. The current members I would consider members for the fact they are the last members that actually played a numerous number of shows. Petra had this keyboard player name Brice or something like that, that should have never played in Petra I think that member was the most boreing guy I have ever seen in a band before and I saw him twice and he never even looked up from the keyboard let alone move. I have no problem with the current members, this was a debate with artwork and I stated I thought it would have been better if none of the members where on the cover on the inside would have been a different story. There will be people out there that are not Petheads that will remember the "old" members and might say,"Hey I don't know those guys, that isn't Petra!"

I think that anyone who heard the call and "suited up" to play for the onstage ministry that is Petra should be considered a member.

cover

Post by Michael » Mon Oct 24, 2005 9:06 am

The album cover isn't for us anyway. We're going to buy it anyway. We would buy it if it was a picture of a snail crawling up a lamppost on the front. The album cover is to get people to buy it who either are NOT already Petra fans, or who maybe WERE Petra fans but moved on to other things at some point. I would guess that their target demographic is the non Petra fan in the 15-25 year old market; as I understand it, those folks (that age, I mean) are the most likely to have cash to burn on a CD as an impulse buy. Then again, those folks are the most likely to download the songs without seeing the album cover at all, too.

sales toe the youth?

Post by beak » Mon Oct 24, 2005 11:14 pm

I don't think the artwork in any form is going to get someone 15-25 to buy this album, if it isn't on TVU or on the radio they're not buying it. We will only be the ones buying it and maybe some or the not so die hards. My twelve year old son likes Petra but that's because he's heard it not just from Petra but from me since he was in the womb! My second son got upset when our band played and I believe it was because I wasn't in a band while he was in the womb. Do you really really believe that four men on a cover bowing is going to get a younger person thinking of buying the album. Artwork maybe at least they would have looked at it but I highly doubt this will influence them to buy it. I asked my son to look at it and he said, "that's it?" and that is exactly what I said the first time, "that's it?" I thought we were going to get blown away with actual artwork but that costs money and I'm sure that was taken in consideration. I am happy we are going to get this live recording and it will be cool to hear it with the newer sound.

This image, if it is the final album cover, will do nothing to promote the album. The plain black album cover was cool for J&H, but when you get to strippo cheapy jobs in a row, you know it isn't being done for the coolness factor.

poll

Post by Michael » Wed Oct 26, 2005 12:10 pm

I actually put a poll up on the Web site for our local Christian rock station. The question: hwo do you like this cover? The three answers: yes, no, eh. So far: about 26 reads of the post, but 4 poll responses (I did not answer my own poll). Of the 4: 3 cool, 1 not cool, 0 "eh".

artwork

Post by beak » Wed Oct 26, 2005 9:13 pm

Finally someone speaks their mind, that you Spottacus I couldn't have said it better myself. It would have been better to have it plain white with just Petra Farewell on it with flowers around the letters. Local Christian rock station, what do they play? Stuff like that is on TVU or like Spirit TV? I highly doubt that some TVU listener would say they liked the album, a soccer mom maybe. Do they play bands like, Kids in the Way, 12 Stones, Skillet etc ?

I know its been talked about in the past about Petra continuing indefintely (by fans).

But after seeing them without Bob, and recently with Bob, the character of the band is Bob and John. No one can do it better.

The songs of Petra will go on, some probably being covered, most not. There may even be a samll reunion tour in a few years. But the ministry of Petra can go on through us. By using their music as encouragement, their ministry as an example, we can go Back to the Street and Beat the System by leading others to Christ. We will give them a chance to go to a place Beyond Belief (not the smothest puns, but hey, what can I do?).

The best legacy of Petra is that they inspire others to live like Christ to go out and glorify him. In fact, that should be the legacy for all christians of all of us.

Cover

Post by Michael » Fri Oct 28, 2005 2:59 pm

We heard a brand-new cover of the 1970's Randy Stonehill classic "Shut De Do" on the radio yesterday. Bizarre. Just shows to go ya that old songs keep getting recycled. :)

I wouldn't be surprised at all to hear a bunch of Petra covers in the next year or two.
