BTTS recorded before CITAS?

Post by Dan » Wed Oct 26, 2005 5:54 am

Can someone confirm that "Back to the street" was recorded without vocals in mid 1985 before "Captured in time and space" was recorded?

Bob did an interview with CCM Mag back in 86-87 and he confirmed in that interview that BTTS was recorded in Aug of '85. The only reason why CITAS was actually recorded was because Petra had a one more album contract with producer JDB. He said they had to fulfill a contract with the producer. Other than that it is just hersay and speculation as far as I know. Webmasters Kirkman and MJ might have more insight because that almost 20 years ago I read that interview.

That would make sense...cause I heard Greg left and John finished out the Beat The System Tour. Funny though...why didn't they do the video with John? (CITAS)

But wow...that blows my whole thinking...I can't even imagine that!

No, I do believe Greg finished out the BTS tour and was meant to sing on CITAS. The songs on BTS and CITAS are really more suited for Greg's voice than John's. John didn't join the band until BTTS, and BTTS is really more suited for his voice than Greg's. John probably sang a lot of songs from BTS when he first joined Petra.

John finished out the BTS Tour. It went into 1986. I saw them with John in Southeast Texas(Beaumont) in March '86 and it was still called BTS Tour. They did play a couple of songs off of BTTS. If I recall "Thankful Heart" & "Whole World"
From how Bob talked in the interview it sounded like BTTS was made knowing Greg would NOT be singing on the album and also he made a point that he wanted to go a different direction style wise and also get back to more basic Christian lyrics hence the name BTTS.

Greg and JDB were under contract for one more album; That is why CITAS was made. They were a packaged deal.

I saw the This Mean War tour and they were still doing alot of stuff from the old days. John sang, Judas Kiss, It is finished, for annie, bts, second wind, and I'll have to dig into my brain to think of the rest. That was 87. :)

I saw them on BTTS as well as BB. Obviously, the longer they went, the less GXV era songs they sang.

That said, it ws amazing to us that they foind a second singer with such a range. John's different than Greg, but both were gifted men of God.

As now, John's versions had a "rockier" edge. I have noticed, even though John can still hit the high notes, his singing has deepened since BTTS.

I KNEW IT! I can't imagine hearing Greg singing "BTTS" or even "This Means War!" When I saw John on the very first concert on the BTTS Tour, it reminded me a little of CITAS, they sang alot of Greg era songs, as well as Louie and John Lawry doing about the same solo as they did on CITAS. It was a cool concert. They started the show with the song BTTS, and I don't remember anything from there. It was great! That my first Petra concert.

It's funny because when I listen to BTTS, I can very easily picture Greg's voice singing most of the songs. Then again, it obviously wasn't written with John in mind, since he wasn't in the picture yet. I always figured that even though Bob knew Greg wouldn't be on the album, he probably wrote the songs with Greg's voice in his head since that's what he was used to doing.

The songs that I can really picture Greg singing on are Back to the Street, You Are I Am, Run For Cover, Alter Ego.
