Re: oops
Your whole post was full of ignorance, but this past was my favorite because its blatant lack of logic is laughable. The reason that our society is so ungodly couldn't be that Christians have tried so hard to make Christianity more worldly! The fact that so much secular thinking has entered the very basic teachings of the modern church couldn't have anything to do with it! No, it's those evil homeschoolers and Chrisitan schools who are simply trying to instill the Christian values that a school system created by an athiest doesn't provide! They're the ones at fault! Give me a freakin' break!Matthew RJ wrote:We as Christians set up "Christian schools" (which are often as ungodly as non-Christian schools), "Christian" movies, music, books, etc. And then we wonder why our society is ungodly? The answer is obvious: it's because Christians have withdrawn and hidden in their own private world. What did Jesus say about being salt and light? Never mind.

Home schooling is the best way to go if you don't want your kids to expose to non christian beliefs and how the non christian beliefs can corrupt your child. I have to answer for how my kids are raised and being taught.
People can do whatever they want for example:
Some parents can send their children to public school. Their free will.
Some parents can home school their children again free will and a better choice. Even though some people don't agree..
My daughter is much happier now and she is doing excellent. My son is coming along as well. By giving them one on one attention which the public schools are not given by the way, my kids are doing much better.

I respect your right to homeschool, and I don't know you or all the specifics to your situation. so I can only believe that you are making the right descion in homeschooling your kids.
But as to home schooling in general, I think that we (Christians) choose to escape our problems and seclude ourselves rather than face them head-on too often.
I see parents everyday who make different choices when faced impoving their child's education.
--parents who become more involved within the school. They volunteer for any and everything they can. And as a result they have a huge impact and influence on the school.
--parents who get involved with the schoolboard. They either run for elected office, or make their persistent prescence known to the members.
--parents who go back to school and get their teaching credentials. They have great success and unmeasurable influence in the classroom.
Why should they go to this extreme, why shouldn't they just take care of their children in the easiest, most direct way?
BECAUSE, for every student whose parents can stay at home and provide a good homeschooled education, there are 100 who can't. I see so many kids with such awful home lives. They don't have any concept of true love, or of parents who care about them or make them the priority. They need the kids who come from good Christian homes. They need the parents who care about not only their own children, but that every student gets a good education, and maybe gets a little taste of love, and compassion.
And you may not believe it, or realize it, but when you remove, even a small light of Christ, that void is filled with darkness.
So, like I said, I know that there are times when all avenues have been exhausted and there is no other choice but to home school. But I just hope that Christians will not make that there first impulse.

I Missed This?
Wow!! I can't believe I missed this one. I have to say I'm disappointed in the reasoning for thinking homeschooling is destructive. We have homeschooled our children for over 20 years and it has NEVER been about sheltering our children but about prioritizing what is our most important goals for our children. Is it not biblically to raise a godly offspring, a heritage unto the Lord?
I don't have the time today to weigh in on this one as much as I would like, but I will. Let me recommend to everyone reading a relatively short book released within the last year or so called AS YOU RISE UP by RC Sproul. Google search Draughthorse Press if you need somewhere to buy it.
To give you something to think about if you can't or won't get this book at this time, read through Dueteronomy 6 concerning how God intented our values to be passed on to our children. Then ask yourself, in our culture where kids are institutionalized for 8 to 10 hours per day, tide up with endless extra curricular or sports activities, when do parents actually do what God commands? Do a search in the bible of the word teach in see often God commands FATHERS to teach their children. He doesn't say fathers make sure your children are taught. He says fathers TEACH.
Oh yeah, I know. Someone will say that's not talking about academics. That statement shows how we have all bought into the worldly system so deeply without even knowing it. We show by our investment in time, money and resources that the most important thing to us is that our kids learn the skills the GOVERNMENT requires so they can earn $$$$$$$ and we fit in with the world.
One more interesting study you can do is to find out what the bible has to say about why God ordained that there be a civil government in the first place. The government is given the power of the sword to protect life and property. Parents are given the power of the rod and the instruction to teach our children. The government was never intended to use the power of the sword to teach our children.

More!
Here's another way of looking at how our North American culture is allowing to government ot misuse the power of the sword. Here's what happens right now. When my neighbor thinks that we need better public schools, he will petition the government to raise property taxes, income taxes and county sales tax. In effect, what he's done is asked the State (meaning all government, not just the individual state) to take the sword, stick it under my chin and say "pay up or we'll take you to jail". This is an unbiblical misuse of the power of the sword.
Government was never intended to be the teacher of our children or the provider for the people. Parents were meant to teach and the Church was meant to provide for he poor, giving glory to God alone and not to the current controlling party in power. The government was to protect people and their propert. But we with our modern day addiction to pragmatism just want to find what we think "works" and not rely totally on what the scriptures teach.
Let let clarifying one issue. I have no problem with parents seeking help in certain areas. However, I would be very cautious about turning them over to a "Christian" instution for 50 hours a week as an answer to the need for help. But I'm dead set against turning over children to be indoctrinated by the State.
Do not render unto Caesar (The State) what is God's (Your Children).

O.K. A little more.
Why is it that those that think we should have our kids in school to engage our culture never send them to Islamic schools? Would you send your child to a Satanist school to reach out to Satan worshipers? Don't underestimate the power of Naturalism and Secular Humanism. Does taking an elementary age child and putting him within a system that challenges everything you believe for 40 to 50 hours per week really make that much sense to you? Now he comes home and turns on the TV and guess what, it gets reinforced.
So how much time to you REALLY take with your children to counteract this? Do you think you're such a powerful influence over you child that an hour or two per day is going to counteract what they're getting from the "prefessionals"? (You're right. Most Christian parents don't even spend that much time with their kids.) So we send our kids off to be people who are professionals at influencing our children and allow them to twist their belief system. Maybe, just maybe this is why :
LESS THAN 20% OF THOSE BEING RAISED IN EVANGELICAL CHURCHES CONTINUE TO BE INVOLVED IN CHURCH AFTER LEAVING HOME.
And the numbers of those that continue in church but reject a biblical world view is even more staggering. What we are doing now is NOT working. Homeschooling is still such a minority that it could not possibly be to blame.

Wait a minute. This thread started with the question "What do you guys think about it?". This is a serious issue and it's going to get passionate responses. This is nothing to run from nor is the course of this discussion something you should regret. This will happen anytime anything more than surface level issues are discussed.AlwaysJohnLawryFan wrote:I didn't create this thread for a debate. I don't know why everybody want to debate my topic I started. I just needed advise. It is not a debate. If you want to start a debate simple start your own debate.
If a mod sees this please lock it. It is finished.
There are always people who say we should limit our discussion in the body of Christ to the "Essential Doctrines" for the sake of unity. Funny thing is this would mean that 90% of the bible was a waste of God's time. Obviously there were many doctrines that are not "essential" to salvation that Paul and the other writers were very passionate about. We dare not ignore them even if it means we argue a little.

When you've been posting for awhile, you'll learn things can get controversial here sometimes, Debra. That's bound to happen when you have a group of people, and this is pretty mild compared to some of the threads we've had. You can't take all this Internet stuff too personally or it'll drive you crazy. This is just people's opinions. You just need to do what you feel is right for your kids, and it sounds like you have.
From what I can tell, Bill is all for home schooling, and he does make some good points. I don't think he's meaning to be disrespectful.
