Get off Inpoops back

Post by Edward » Tue Dec 27, 2005 7:47 pm

Inpop is the best label in the world. They are perfect.
Anyone that doesn't agree with everything they do should no say a word!

Since Edward deleted his posts mostly in their entirety, mine no longer made sense so I will also delete mine.

What a piece of work.

Inpop is a pretty good, small record label. They're like a lot of small businesses - they don't necessarily have departments with staffs specializing in each individual function of the company. Instead they have people doing big jobs, handling a lot of responsibility and doing the best they can. That's how small companies work.

I think the real problem is that CCM fans have left Petra behind because either their musical taste is too shallow to appreciate a band like Petra or they're embarrassed by Petra (too old, not young and pretty enough).

Petra and Petra's fans owe Inpop their gratitude, and I happen to think that Shara's working hard and doing a pretty good job. As with any business, there are probably legitimate criticisms to be made. But you won't hear them from me.

I think Petra's problems have more to do with the mentality of today's music fans than the record company or the band. A contributing factor is that music stores and radio stations seem to have something against Petra, but I guess that's just them trying to do good business and not play a band that's being shunned by the community at large.

I find it amusingly ironic that your thread title calls them "Inpoop". Freudian slip?

IMO, I think the problem has to do more with the mentality of who SHOULD be listening to the various types of music. There is a real void for people my age in the area I live in. If you grew up listening to Petra and you are now in your 30's, you either have to listen to the kids new stuff or you are expected to move away totally from rock music and listen to CCM's contemporary/praise format. There is nothing for you! I just turned 31 in November and here, it's Reliant K/Jonah 33/Audio Adrenaline on the one hand or Michael W. Smith/Mercy Me/Steven Curtis Chapman on the other. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with these groups, but it's one style or the other, there is no classic christian rock or melodic rock choice. The only band other than Petra that I really can consistently listen to is Third Day, as imo they are as close to the style of music that I like that actually gets released/played. And, traditional southern gospel is good but that's more on the lines for listening to once in a blue moon. So, imo, there is an attitude that once you get to a certain age, you are supposed to convert over to mainstream ccm and leave behind your rebellious ways of Rock and Roll

Although I guess it is part of it, I don't know that the primary cause for Petra's problems is necessarily that people don't want to hear.
I have met a number of people online who when seeing me post about Petra, say something to the effect of 'I loved those guys! I didn't know they were still around-I haven't heard anything about them in 10-15 years.' and they want to hear them again.
I think it is more of a case of specific demographics (as pmal mentioned) not liking Petra, and theirs are the only voices being listened to.

I don't think it helped Petra when the big Bob decided NOT to tour. It became the John show with the Petra name. I love Petra but it just wasn't the same when Bob was gone. I've worked in the pro concert industry for 20+ years and done hundreds of shows. Even several Petra shows. But IMO I think the majority of Petra fans just got older and got different priorities. Jobs, family, church, take time and money that focuses away from a band. Buying Petra product and going to concerts just didn't compete with the other priorities. Look, they had trouble getting a record contract because no one was buying their product! If they were a marketable band a record company would snap them up in a minute. Record companies, even "christian" labels look at the bottom line. Make us money or your done. I've seen it dozens of times from labels with personal friends of mine that are musicians all through the 80's and 90's. Every musician/songwriter that I know has it in them to write. They have to! I think we will hear from Bob in the future in some way.

Petra Praise 2 actually did very well in the marketplace, despite the fact that Word Records did not market it as thoroughly as they could have. At the time Word was ditching the rock and roll acts and throwing their money at the pop acts; Petra they no longer knew how to handle. God Fixation was barely marketed at all, so it tanked. Double Take, despite being a very artistically-done CD, was clearly, from the label's point of view, a "let's finish up this contract and get these guys out of here" type of CD. What I'm getting at is that Word dropped the ball in the mid-90's and Petra has never recovered. The reason people haven't heard anything from them in years is because of the snowball effect of Word didn't put the product in front of people, so it didn't sell, so next cycle they couldn't justify the advertising expenses, so it didn't sell, and on and on.

It went a little further than that just them dropping the ball, actually. I happened to attend the GMA week the year Double Take was released, and I recall that Word's press packet for Petra consisted of a folder, inside the folder was a one sheet with some brief info about the band, and a review pulled off the internet that slammed Double Take. John Schlitt was understandably ticked, and when my friend asked if they planned to release any new music videos for the album, John emphatically shook his head and said, "Never with Word. Never again with Word."

So they didn't just drop the ball, they shoved Petra out the door with a mean-spirited kick in the rump.
