JAH nominated for Grammy

Post by executioner » Thu Dec 04, 2003 2:44 pm

If JAH wins, boy this should put a quirk in everything that is wrong in CCM today. With this lineup of nominations JAH could easily win this thing. :D

Yeah, you're right about people scratching their heads... who in the heck is "Robert Randolph & The Family Band"? Sounds like a bluegrass act from the 50's.

who's Petra? And why are they nominated for a Grammy?

Don't forget though, Double Take got a grammy and that just seemed to make CCM even more angry with people saying "They just won because of their Name, not the music." But still, pretty odd that the secular awards are the ones recognizing Petra and the christian community ignoring.

Well, come on now, do you really thinking the grams are recognizing petra for the music? Not the name? I think even the two band members know this is a joke.

I think what the ccm community has a problem with, is that there is far better music that should have been on the list. People might look at the list outside the ccm world and then listen to J and H and think "That's the best ccm has to offer?"

Petra I think will win this, but Relient K is pretty popular too.

Maybe we can send some Emails in with subliminal messages.

Go Petra! :D

Granted, the Petra name DOES carry recognition - but in regards to DT, it is a VERY artistic album, like it or not, and hopefully the Grammy voters really DID listen to it and voted based upon the album's merits, not upon whose name was stamped on the cover.

one problem with this line of thinking...

Post by superfly » Fri Dec 05, 2003 7:50 am

The problem I have with the line of thinking that Petra wins grammys because of name recognition is this...

1) Petra has never crossed over and gained popularity on the secular side, especially when compared to those Christian rock bands that have.

2) Petra's height in popularity was over a decade ago

3) If Petra won because of name recognition, why haven't all of their albums since the 80s won grammys? Surely they would've made it on the ballot and won every time if people only voted for "Petra" when they saw it.

You make some very good points, Fly.

Tell me, does anyone know - are the voters GIVEN the nominated CDs to listen to, or are they supposed to search these out themselves or what?

I'm curious as to HOW the decision to vote is made.

My understanding is that only the committees or members who go over the initial nominations receive product to listen to. These people make sure that the nominations meet the proper criteria and are entered into the proper categories for the initial voting to establish who will make it for the final balloting.

People need to remember that only Academy members are allowed to vote for the awards. That means that fans, store workers and most magazine writers do not meet the criteria to vote. Also, members are encouraged to vote in the fields that they work in i.e Gospel, Country, Classical, etc. Obviously there are many people like recording engineers who work across category lines and so they likely vote in many different categories. But, make no mistake. Your not likely to have a someone who has 0 falmiliarity with an artist or groups recent work in a given category doing a ton of voting.

It's funny one critic says the Grammys too often just award the newest and hotest acts ignoring established artists who don't have the mega sales numbers any more. The others say preference is given for name recognition and young acts don't get the recognition. Which one is it?

Awards

Post by Shell » Fri Dec 05, 2003 2:32 pm

I don't have anything against awards per se, but when you get right down to it, they're not really what matters. I'll still listen to Petra whether they get an award or not. :) I do think there are too many people with good messages out there who get overlooked, it's become too much about money and popularity. :P

The problem with the arguement that Petra is only there because of name recognition is that the music is good. When someone listens to it objectively and listens to it for quality, not for who is in the band, or enter excuse for hating Petra here, they realize that too. The music is really good. If it was just name recognition, they would have won for God Fixation and Revival, since they had won for Petra Praise and then for Double Take. Just like every one of my secular music fans and Christian rock fans that dont have preconceived notions, they really like Petra's music.

Phillip

PS Bill, go to www.johnwschlitt.com and view the band's performance at See you at the Pole. I see more than two band members there. Unless, you just dont care and you are just a troll :). Just kidding man, gotta give you a hard time. I dont know what my life would be like without the influence of Petra and you're killing me with your negativity.

My vote would be for Petra, but my guess would be Audio Adrenaline. I don't know much about any of the canidates, so I have to go with what I know.

I'll be happy if either Petra or RR&the Family Band wins...if you haven't heard of Robert Randolph, go out and buy his album, it's awesome. He plays the pedal steel ("Hawaiian Guitar") with amplification and distortion. His sound is really gritty, high-energy blues/rock.
