Fav petra songs poll #5 (More Power To Ya)

Post by greenchili » Thu Jan 26, 2006 12:56 am

Alright everybody thanks for voting on the previous poll. Moving on...

With the recent ending of Petra's music ministry I thought it'd be kind of cool to start a series of polls on favorite songs. Starting with their first album and working to the last. I figured I'd do an album each week.

So for those interested, get out your petra CD's and start listening.

Voting for last weeks album "Never Say Die" has completed or will soon. Seems we are missing two voters but we must move on. Results from the previous poll.

Angel Of Light [9]
Praise Ye The Lord [6]
Chameleon [4]
The Coloring Song [3]
For Annie [ 2 ]
Killing My Old Man [1]
Father Of Lights [1]
Without Him We Can Do Nothing [0]
Never Say Die [0]
I Can Be Friends With You [0]

The clear winner is.....! Angel Of Light. Even with the two missing votes this song woulda, coulda, shoulda won.

Next up? "More Power To Ya" released in 1982. The album where all the pieces finally fell together. A few notes.

1) Apparently Bob really likes this album and considers it one of petra's best. (read it in some liner notes somewhere).
2) Cool guitar cover (hey I couldn't help myself)
3) Louie Weaver's now listed as being part of petra
4) This album made #98 in CCM Magazines "100 Greatest Albums In Christian Music". As usual they get in a jab about the God-focused lyrics . Critics...
5) First christian song to use backmasking?
6) Am I the only one that prefers dental work over listening to "All Over Me"?

Anyways... go ahead and spin your discs and put in your vote!!!

Again, so many songs that I want to vote for. I really like Disciple (love the duet with Mark) and Stand Up. In fact, I think that Stand Up is one of the definitive songs of the Volz era. Check that - the 80s. But ultimately I voted for neither. My vote went to one of my all-time favourite Petra songs: Rose Colored Stained Glass Windows. That song and Walking in the Light are my favs of all Petra.

For me it wasn't really hard to choose on this one. It was and will always be Judas' Kiss. This is the first song I ever heard by Petra, but the strange thing aobut this song was I heard it on the NSD tour back in 1981. They opened up with Judas' Kiss and after the song Bob told everyone that would be on the next album. Man that was an awesome time!
Other notables on this album are:

Second Wind
Rose Colored
Run For The Prize
Dicsiple

I voted for Second Wind - that's the one song I most look forward to when I listen to More Power to Ya. In second place for me is Judas Kiss, and third is Let Everything that Hath Breath.

I have always loved the song Judas Kiss as well. The guitar solos in the song have always been awesome. I really love this album. I was listening to it the other day and having a blast worshiping God to it. All over me isn't on any of the "best of" albums, and so I had never heard it until I bought the full CD. Every time I hear it, I sing along to it, and it is a very annointed time for me, just love it.

I had no doubt what my favorite on this album is... Rose Colored Stained Glass Windows. That song often gets stuck in my head for days at a time, and I was even singing it out loud around mile 23 of one of my marathons! I will say, however, that I really prefer John Schlitt singing it (I've heard them do this live several times). And I loved the Jars Of Clay version...

Yeah believe it or not I used to not like "Judas Kiss" at all, and "Run For The Prize" used to be my favorite on this album. But now many years later I appreciate "Judas Kiss" for the great song it is.

The biggest problem with "All Over Me" is it goes on WAY too long. It's almost a 6 minute song. I've had dentist visits more preferabble.

yes, it is a long song. Wow if you can get in and out of a dentis in 6 minutes, I want to know your dentist.

Again, though I voted for Judas' Kiss I don't have just one favorite off of More Power To Ya. My other faves include More Power To Ya; Rose Colored Stained Glass Windows; All Over Me; Everything That Hath Breath and Road To Zion My wife's favorite is Judas' Kiss
I also liked One Bad Pig's version of Judas' Kiss as well as The version of All Over Me by Die Happy.

The problem with All Over Me was that it was too SLOW! That one and Fool's Gold always drove me crazy for that (though in the case of Fool's Gold it sounded like they didn't have enough to make a full length song)
But All Over Me would have been hugely improved if they had just played it a little faster. It would have still been slow, just not plodding.

Oh and I voted for Rose Coloured Stained Glass Windows. It's really only between that one and Road to Zion for me.

My vote went to Second Wind, look at the screen name and go figure. Great songs on this album. Second Wind, Stand Up, Judas Kiss, Rose Colored, Run for the Prize the title track all should be on any "Greatest Hits" list.

This was the first album where the Petra songs were every bit as good as anything secular at the time. Although the lesser songs weren't that good. In fact if you took More Power To Ya and NSD and ranked the songs 1-20, More Power To Ya would have the #1-#6 songs with the ENTIRE NSD album 7-16 and then the rest of MPTY as 17-20.

This was also the first album that people who weren't into Christian music knew of and liked. Judas' Kiss was actually crossover popular at my school.

Yeah I really like road to zion as well, but you probably wont see me vote for any slower song.

I'll have to listen to "All Over Me" again and see if maybe I can maybe make a shorter "mix" version. I've sometimes done that with longer songs before, so maybe that'll do the trick.

Thanks for mentioning those other covers. I'll have to check them out.

I've never thought All Over Me was too long, nor, too slow. I'm partial to long songs. Maybe it's from being listening to songs by Chuck Mangione and Maynard Ferguson, as a high school kid, where with "improv" solos their songs could last 14 minutes at times. I don't know... that's just me I guess. :)

Personally I dont like "Judas' Kiss" that much.
From this album I prefer "Rose Colored Stained Glass Windows"
and "More Power To Ya"

I also think that "Rose Colored Stained Glass Windows" should be a little bit longer...
