Fav petra songs poll #6 (Not Of This World)

Post by greenchili » Thu Feb 02, 2006 12:56 am

Thanks again for voting on the previous poll. Moving along.

With the recent ending of Petra's music ministry I thought it'd be kind of fun to start a series of polls on favorite songs. Starting with their first album and working to the last. I figured I'd do an album each week.

So for those interested, get out your petra CD's and start listening.

Voting for last weeks album "More Power To Ya" has completed. Seems we are picked up a voter. :D Results from the previous poll.

Judas Kiss (#1 single) [13]
Rose Colored Stained Glass Windows [6]
Second Wind [3]
Stand Up [2]
More Power To Ya (#1 single) [2]
Road To Zion [2]
All Over Me [1]
Run For The Prize [0]
Let Everything That Hath Breath [0]
Disciple [0] (sorry mark) ;)

The clear winner was "Judas Kiss" with "Rose Colored Stained Glass Windows" as the underdog runner-up. Funny how that song just has a way of sticking in yer head.

Next up! "Not Of This World" released in 1983. This is probably petra at their finest while Greg Volz was at the helm. A few notes.

1) Still got the cool guitar cover (hey I couldn't help myself)
2) First time Petra started listing bible verses to go with their songs?
3) John Slick listed in credits, but John Lawry was the one who toured with them.

Feel free to add anything.

I had to combine Visions and Visions Reprise into one option because I had too many poll options. :(

Anyways... go ahead and spin your discs and put in your vote!!!

After the release of MPTY I was somewhat disappointed with NOTW. On the music side I feel it is too mellow, but the lyrics really stand up to the test of time. It was on of those albums you do not like the first time you hear it, but over the years it has really grown on me. It's a top ten for me!

Well, Again a lot of winner songs. But this time I made my option just in a minute. I voted 'Not Of This World' for a personal reason: when my wife and I engaged, this song was playing in the background of the place where we are. :P

Godpleaser for me.

I know its not really a Petra classic, but I have always used it at my personal daily walk. One of my favs of all time.

That said, Graverobber is a great song. It is quite a mello album, and quite a jump considering what came next!

Although I coulda easily picked several songs off of this one. I picked "Blinded Eyes" it was always one of my favorites and has a similar sound to "Chameleon". Plus there is that bass interlude in the middle. Of course "Pied Piper" is similar to "Chameleon" as well.

"Speak To The Sky" off of the next album also has that sound, but I'll get into that on the next poll. Beginning to see a pattern here?

And yes "Pied Piper" has a kickin' solo in there.

My sister used to play this album to death.

Wok of this World

I believe this is poll #6, right? You put #5.

I voted for Beeeema Seat! I guess I have a tendency to prefer second (full-length) songs of albums. I voted for Chameleon and Second Wind for the previous two. Also, I voted for From Wrong to Right on The Yellow and Black Attack. Crazy, isn't it?

However, Beat the System will beat that system because my favorite song on it is not Computer Brains...

(well, Bema Seat is really the third song, but it's the second full-length song...)

There is not one song on here I dislike, but, it was no contest for me what song to vote for and that's Grave Robber. That has helped me get through some tough times when Loved Ones left this life here by reminding me that death is not the end. When I start thinking of family members(my own & extended) I sometimes play just Grave Robber two or three times in a row and then play the rest of NOTW.

Arrgh I knew my cuttin and pastin would catch up to me!! ;)

Was having technical difficulties last night and was a little bit distracted..

What?? No Computer Brains? I just love the guitar parts in that song. Not sure if I would vote it as my favorite though.. :D

In my opinion, this was the best album of the Volz era, and one of the best concept albums. I think I'm in a minority of one in considering it a concept album, but listening through is just a fabulous other-worldly journey. The only song that didn't fit (and kind of spoiled it for me) was lift him up.

This is the first hard choice for me, but I went with Bema Seat. I like the kinda Sarah Vaughnesque up-down quality of the vocals.

God Pleaser was one of my favorites since the first time I heard it. I like this album, although it starts off too slow and mellow. But I do think it's cool how they melded the Visions and Doxology into the other songs.

OK. This poll has ended. Here are da results..

Grave Robber (#1 single) [9]
Bema Seat [5]
Not By Sight [5]
God Pleaser [5]
Not Of This World (#1 single) [3]
Blinded Eyes [3]
Lift Him Up [2]
Pied Piper [1]
Occupy [1]
Visions & Visions Reprise (Doxology) [0]

This makes the first poll to get a vote for virtually every song except for one (which I can understand why). But the clear winner is "Grave Robber" who rose from the dead and "stole" the lead! (yeah I know very bad puns). In a three way tie for second we have "Bema Seat", "Not By Sight" and "God Pleaser".
