I vote for "King's Ransom" largely to to the lyrics of the song, but I also like the songs "Back to the Street," "Whole World," and "Fool's Gold."

The rest of the album is about average for me...and also not one of my favorites although there are good parts to it.

I agree, though - certain songs seem like they would have fit better with Volz (Back to the Street, You Are I Am).

Well luckily I found something called straterra which worked really great for me and just happens to work for him. The best thing is, it is not a controlled substance. Anyways just imagine two AD people, father and son. It aint easy sometimes.

I got thru not having any medicine all those years by developing principles around the bible. That way my reactions would be principle driven. For the most part it helped keep me out of trouble. Well that, and getting saved.

Anyways it was pretty rough emotionally when dealing with the fact my son had AD (I dont believe in the HD part), but Jesus pretty much worked everything out thankfully.

This is one of the first Petra albums I ever listened to when I was a kid.

The title track is best for me. It starts the album off with a musically thrilling experience.

Other favorites are "Shakin da House," "Whole World," and "Another Crossroad."

I am adult ADHD, and have chosen to be non-medicated at this point. I was diagnosed at age 6 (nearly 30 years ago), when the diagnosis wasn't very common, and was blessed to have a mom who was a special education teacher that recognied what was going on and helped me. I probably would have been an outcast problem child if not for her appropriate intervention at my young age!

I am fortunate enough to have a life and occupation that allows me to not HAVE to use the medication. I work in a group home, where my impulses and creativity are a plus, and where I can be up and around, instead of trying to sit at a desk or go through a lot of meetings. I also work with an auto racing series part of the year, so my high adrenaline level has an outlet there.

My biggest outlet is a large amount of physical activity. I am a marathon and ultramarathon runner as much because the long distances in training and racing give me an outlet for my large amounts of energy and time alone to process and sort out my life as I am because I like to run.

Things the people in my life do to help me out include giving me lots of attention or affection when I do something in the "socially acceptable" way, or very tactfully (and privately) reminding me when I do something that isn't. Focusing on the positives, not the negatives, will make me more likely to do the right things again... Although I need to know the negatives to make an attempt to change! I use lots of notes to myself to try and stay somewhat organized. Although most of my life still looks chaotic to outsiders, it works for me.
My significant other still has a rough time dealing with my ADHD at times, and probably always will, but has learned to tolerate the things I can't control and helps me notice the things I can. Emotions and impulses are a part of my life, and that will never change. How he responds to them, however, can make a difference...

Well things are working out pretty well being on the medicine. I'm just not used to being normal, and have about 30+ years of relearning to do. All my behaviours and habits were a result of dealing with AD, but alot of them I dont really need anymore. For example I can actually remember what I did earlier in the day or the previous week. I'm also more likely to notice long term issues.

AD is weird. Lots of creativity, but no direction. I've always felt I could survive on imagination alone.

The biggest problem is my tendancy to take on projects larger than I can handle. So I got a whole backlog of stuff, but I'm alot more consistent so I'm slowly knocking them down. The medicine does seem to clog my creativity a little. But I just cut back on the dose a little to get the 'ol creativity juices going again.

As for my son, well he is alot younger so he can adapt alot quicker. Took about 1year and a half for him to be more like a normal kid. He is actually realizing there are consequences to actions, etc. But he is still a little impulsive. He has the typical traits. Lots of energy, goes against authority (rebel without a clue), etc. You can only imagine what it's like when we butt heads.

For the album BTTS, my vote would be for Whole World. I really fell in love with this song when I first heard it back in 1994. The lyrics are so powerful and was a real source of hope for me (maybe all of us) after 9/11. Whenever I face a crisis, I look to the lyrics of this song for hope. My other faves off this record are Fool's Gold, Thankful Heart, and You Are I Am.
This is actually one of my favourite Petra records. The sound is so 80's. I would have loved to have heard something from this record live on the Farewell tour, but I am not surprised they didn't. The synth sound would have been hard to capture with today's lineup. They maybe could have fit Thankful Heart in to the acoustic medley, but anyway. I actually like this cd better than This Means War.
Perhaps some of these songs would have been better suited for Voltz to sing, but I can think of stuff Voltz sings that is better suited for John too, so it all evens out.

Hey reoracer. Forgot to mention. I'm glad you found something that works for you. I know that women with ADHD react differently. Never really met one till now.

A little backstory. I was determined to have it around age 7, but back then they called it hyperactivity and did not really understand it all that well. It's better defined these days but sometimes I wonder if they completely understand it. I figure it's mankinds inevetible fallout from heaven.

The only thing that saved me was when I accepted Christ at age 12. I was constantly getting in trouble. The change in me was so profound my family could not help but notice and they all eventually got saved. Believe it or not I used to run alot when I was a kid as well and probably coulda easily became a distance runner. But I have some nerve in my shoulder that really bothers me if I run to long.

Anyways the process of discovering my son had it as well was really rough. I think the chances of inhereting it are like 2 out of 3. Blech. I ended up deciding that in order to be able to help him the best possible way I would have to do something for my self. I had a tendancy to be "out of it" sometimes for weeks at a time. So here I am now.

As for the encouraging thing. I try to, but he tends to get act up when I praise him for when he is being quiet. So I'm not sure what to do in that situation.

ADHD is a very subtle thing and it is very easy to misdiagnos it. Probably why people are running around putting there kids on ritalin when it is not needed. Schools dont help either. Teachers sometimes act like they do not how to handle kids.

You're right. A lot of them don't know how to handle the behavior issues, especially when they have several who act up. They start to correct one or two children, and while they're doing that, another 5 to 6 are doing something behind her back. It makes for a very dangerous and frustrating situation for some.

I would rephrase that. Teachers are often not allowed to handle kids. Big difference. And more often than not, many of the trouble makers do not have behavioral problems. I think it is unfair to the people who really do have these problems to label every child who misbehaves as ADHD, or what have you.

As I mentioned with my dad; because he did not have any discipline of his own, it had to come from somewhere else-for him, that was his parents and teachers. He had a teacher who was "tough but fair" and has always remembered him as an important person in his life-probably the reason he became a teacher himself.
My grade one teacher died last month. We were telling Mrs Lovequist stories and laughing over the fact that if someone else tried half the things she pulled, they'd be quite literally fired. Yet they were not harmful in the least. They make good stories!

It's sad that teachers are not able to play this type of role in kids lives anymore, but really they aren't. In many cases, they are under no touch rules, and it's more for their own protection than anything. There is precious little they can do.


BTW, my whole family-with the exception of my mom-was hyper (though in my oldest brother's case it was caused by allergies to red food dye). My poor mom had to deal with all of us! We made her so mad she beat us with the fly swatter.

Yeah I have a few family members (all on my mom's side) who may have possibly had it and did not realize it. All of them were alcoholics which apparently people with ADHD are highly subsceptible to it.

Oddly I have them to thank since I steered clear of stuff like that because of them.

charl, you're right too. Sometimes teachers aren't allowed to have any say in the discipline of the children. It depends on the place sometimes. The two school I'm in here still allow for students to be spanked.

Well to give you an example outside of the corporal punishment realm.

There was an incident that occured with my son which got him sent to the principles office. Or should I say assistant principle since that is who my wife ended up talking too.

It was a simple situation which could of easily been handled by the teacher. Anyone familar with kids knows the old instigation routine. Two kids do not get along, one kid provokes the other kid, the other kid gets caught in the act. Just a little thought on the teachers part could have taken care of the situation.

I chalked it up to lack of experience, but really... On top of that the assistant kept on talking to my wife how my son was a constant problem and I'm like "that's news to me". Well apparently when my wife asked her to pull his record she seemed to have trouble finding it. We think she was getting him mixed up with another kid.

I've had my co-worker tell me of similar situations where the solution was simple, yet she had to intervene because the teacher was either too lazy, or too stupid. Not sure which. Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing on teachers but sometimes I think they are just too scared sometimes and just go into autopilot. I suppose I cant blame them, but it is irritating to have to intervene on such simple matters.
