I will stop talking about Japan if you want me to

Post by yamasaaaki har har » Sun Feb 26, 2006 12:00 am

Someone on the Petra topic forum mentioned that several of you have become tired of my frequent references to Japan and its language and culture. I don't know if that's true, but if it is, I am totally willing to refrain from that subject matter from now on.

Just to clarify: even though I do have a love for Japan and many other non-U.S. countries, I am proud to be a citizen of the United States. Like Greg Volz, I am also glad I was born and grew up in the U.S.

As far as I can tell, only one person made a post like that; he (or she) sort of included other people in what was said when nobody else had actually said that. I wouldn't worry a whole lot about it. You can't take this Internet stuff too personally or it will drive you crazy. However, as I've said before: If you have issues with a post someone has made, it should be dealt with it by private message or e-mail. I personally think the Japanese culture is interesting.

no references to nail polish or staplers allowed - no no no

Post by yamasaaaki har har » Mon Feb 27, 2006 10:12 pm

What if these friends of yours constantly talked about a different country, such as Guatemala or India - would you get tired of that too? Or let's say they talked obscessively about a totally different subject, say for instance, tennis, computers, or cats - would that also get annoying?

It's easy enough for anyone who is not interested to bypass your threads. That's the beauty of the internet-you can ignore anything you don't like.
For the record, that person certainly did not speak for me. I would not be that uncouth...online anyway.

Relax, Dan; Elo probably would feel the same way in the situations you described. I'm sure it's not Japan.

You can't take all this Internet stuff too personally.

Many combolations Strong Shell on your 2,009th e-mail!

Post by yamasaaaki har har » Tue Feb 28, 2006 10:24 am

come to think of it, I guess if a college student I hung out with a lot kept talking about the same subject over and over, I guess it would drive me crazy too. And I'd be like, "hey, d'ya think you could talk about something else for once?" Even if they were talking continuously about karate or Anime cartoons - I'd probably get tired of that. So I guess I understand how Ep feels. I know Ep doesn't have anything against the Japanese.

One time I went with some friends to see the movie X-men 2. I wasn't too impressed with teh movie because I'm not interested in superheroes or action comics. And after the movie my friends kept talking on and on about X-men. and in my head I was thinking, I'm not interested - could we change the subject so I can join in the conversation?

Congratulations Shell on 2,009 posts!!

gosh, stop talking about cranberry jelly and apple juice!!

Post by yamasaaaki har har » Tue Feb 28, 2006 9:44 pm

Actually, I wasn't upset or offended at all. I was just asking the question out of curiosity. Only curiosity. Sorry if I sounded mad.

The disadvantage of communication through writing is that it's difficult to tell what emotions the speaker is conveying. When we speak with someone orally and in person, their body language and tone of voice reveal their emotions.

When I asked those questions, I was only curious. I didn't mean to sound upset, but I guess I accidentally did. (sorry) I try to convey emotion as accurately as I can when I post messages on the Zone - but as I said, it's difficult when we can't hear or watch each other talk.

Hey Ep, I was never mad at ya. I'm sure no one here dislikes Japan (except for maybe **CoughcoughJonathanCoughandcough ComputerbrainsCoughcough**) (oh excuse me, I think I have a cold...) - well, even though their rash comments on the "Japanglish-ized Petra album titles" thread were totally uncalled for, I forgive them anyway.

There's nothing intrinsically wrong with being upset, Dan; you shouldn't feel you can't speak up and say you're upset. But you're right, it is hard when you can't see or hear each other. I don't normally get upset over Internet stuff, but there are a few things that will set me off, and I'm not afraid to say so.

That's true. Just like you, I also have nothing against being upset and expressing upset-ness. (not a word) Whenever I'm upset, I naturally want everyone to know. The thing is, though, I don't want people to think I'm upset when I'm not. I don't like being misinterpreted. It's true that what Computerbrains said to me on the other forum upset me, and I definitely want him to know. I'm willing to express the fact. But nothing epdc said upset me, so I don't want anyone mistaking that I'm upset at her when I'm really not.

If you ever meet me (which I hope will happen), you'll probably notice right away that I wear my emotions on my sleeve. I enjoy expressing how I feel.
