Our reasoning was that then the A side would've been perfect, as we didn't particularly care for Love-all that noise. Although after hearing them play that pared down version of Love last year, I realized it is a much better song that the production of Beyond Belief made it out to be. I wish they had've played the whole thing.
I thought the song "Love" was gorgeously done on Beyond Belief. The version on Farewell is nice too, though maybe a little too stripped-down (since it was just with acoustic guitar and bongos)

"Prayer" is a perfect final song and fits well on side 2.

Maybe, but the stripping down of the song was a much better fit with the theme. Remember where the inspiration finds itself! Right in the middle of chaos and noise is a moment of praise for the simple virtue of love. Plain and not ostentatious, unlike tongues and prophesy.

That song for many years was the only one I really disliked off of the album. The live version has completely redeemed it for me.

I never did get the similarity between I Am On the Rock and Def Leppard. I don't remember those songs sounding shockingly alike, maybe vaguely...I did always think that Bob ripped off part of the the opening riff of Purple Haze at the end of Last Daze-and I thought it would have been cool if he had done it on purpose, as a statement. But he probably didn't.

I never thought I'd say it, but I really think Love is the best song of this album. It's hard to choose as there are various good songs in it, but I, at this time, prefer love

I think that he likely did do it on purpose, since it's not an isolated incident. The ending riff from his guitar solo on Farewell is taken from an old Joe Satriani song. Also, he includes a little Sweet Home Alabama when playing Lord I Lift Your Name on High live (although he's certainly not the first to do so).

Gotta go with Beyond Belief. Once again, I bring up the matter of "whole album" as a voting option - because for this one, if I could vote that way, I would.

But I can't - so I vote for Beyond Belief - it was the first Petra ROCK (read: not ballad) song I ever heard (via music video at my youth group), and has been one of my favorites ever since.

Since I will be gone when the poll for Unseen Power comes out - my wife is due to give birth on Saturday, April 1st (obviously, the birthing process has not happened yet or I wouldn't be posting here right now) and I will be without internet access for the next seven to ten days.

I would like to log my vote now for the song "Sight Unseen." Could someone please make sure this gets counted in next week's poll?

Sounds like an appropriate song title considering what you are just about to go thru. You have my early congradulations.

Pour some rocks on me

Post by yamasaaaki har har » Tue Mar 28, 2006 10:57 pm

For the most part, I Am On the Rock amd Pour Some Sugar On Me are two very different songs. However, there are several moments in the chorus of Petra's song that slightly resemble Def Leppard's song.

The chord progression in the chorus to Def Leppard's song is:
1, 4, 5; 1, 4, 5; 1, 4, 5; 6

The chord progression in the chorus of Petra's song is:
1, 4, 5; 6, 4, 5; 1, 4, 5; 6, 4, 5; 4, 5; 1, 4; 4, 5, 6; 1, 4, 5

The "1, 4, 5" deal appears in both, but Petra's song chorus has slight variations (6, 4, 5) and some totally different stuff.

Yeah, I know - too technical. Probably only those who understand music theory understand what the heck I'm talkin' about.

OK this one is officially over.

Here the results...

Creed (#1 single) [10]
Beyond Believe (#1 single) [7]
I Am On The Rock [4]
Seen And Not Heard [2]
Prayer [2]
Love (#1 single) [1]
Underground [1]
What's In A Name? [1]
Last Daze [0]
Armed And Dangerous [0]

Coming as no surprise "Creed" takes the #1 spot with 10 votes. "Beyond Believe" at #2 with 7 and "I Am On The Rock" in a distant 3rd at 7.

A little tidbit about Creed. The idea came from, of all places, Bob's wife when she made an off-the-cuff comment that she would like to see him write a song about what we believe as Christians. Oddly enough Bob said that the apostle's creed was recited by the church he grew up in every Sunday. That church didn't believe in a personal relationship with Christ. Funny how such a great verse can end part of a church ritual and lose it's meaning to the very members reciting it.

A little self parody on my part. I noticed that little mishap a few days ago. It was caused by me accidentally clicking on the submit button before the poll was ready.
