Greg X Volz and REO Speedwagon?

Post by MineField » Sun Sep 24, 2006 4:07 pm

They say you learn something new everyday? Well, I sure have! I just checked out Greg's website and I had no idea that in the 70's, he was originally offered the role of lead vocalist for REO Speedwagon! Of course, we all know that he joined Petra instead! Wow...I never had a clue! Just thought I'd share that tidbit of info with you all! :P

Check out his site at

Well... that depends upon who you ask. In the REO camp, it is said he auditioned for the spot, but not offered. But no matter who has the correct facts, I doubt anyone would argue that it didn't turn out for the best in both instances.

Well I guess we all heard Greg X Volz say he was in offered lead singer in Reo Speedwagon.

Where are your sources that argue this? and don't say wiki

Sounds like a pretty reliable source who knows what he's talking about.

In all fairness, I would not call either Neal or Greg liars. From what I understand, things were a lot more casual than they are today (none of that "my people will contact your people" stuff).

However, I do find that Greg's site tends to stretch the truth a bit. For one thing, he seems to take credit for Petra's Farm Aid appearance, which occurred at least 7 years after he left. He also conveniently leaves out his first marriage, giving one who reads this site the impression that he has been married to his current wife all along. Again, this isn't necessarily dishonest, but manipulates the facts to make interesting (and more flattering) reading.

I don't know about any of that...I was just re-stating what I read on his site. Besides...the part about his first marriage, why would Greg have to mention something like that on his site anyway? It is his personal business...perhaps he didn't feel like that piece of information was worth sharing with the public maybe?

It's not only stated on Gregs site but has mentioned it in audio interviews.

Here is one of them http://www.cmrewind.com/new/modules/new ... storyid=28

Says something about him on the phone to them and how he just could sing the material.

There are even posts that go back to 1994 about this.

In any case I believe Greg not just because I am a real Petra fan, but because I had a mate that was on drugs like the boys from reo and they have lost there memory too of actions in the past.

There usually is more than one side to every story, and stories can vary depending on who you ask. That doesn't necessarily mean someone is deliberately trying to be deceitful, or that one person is totally right and another is totally wrong. I've learned to be cautious about believing everything I read. You can only get a limited take at best on what you might read in articles or on the Internet; a lot can be left out just with editing, and people have different opinions and different perceptions about circumstances.

One of my friends who is close friends with Volz well said that Volz tried to make a big entrance during his audition but slipped and fell on his butt instead. As I understand it, things kinda went downhill from there.

By the way, my friend heard this directly from Greg himself.
