Servant

Post by greenchili » Sat Jun 17, 2006 3:17 pm

Not sure if anyone are big fans of the christian group Servant. But christian discs is doing a limited release of two of their albums. "Shallow Water" and Rockin' Reival". I got em in hopes that eventually they will get around to "Light Manuevers" and "Swimming In A Human Ocean".

Anyways I've seen a few CCM re-issues from artists and so far this one is one of the nicer (in regards to the packaging). These two albums came with the lyric insert included! On glossy too. Most other ones don't even include lyrics.

What kind of music can I expect from Servant? Is it in any way comparable to early 80s Petra? I've never heard them.

Check out the tune Jungle Music. It is not only funny, they mention all of the top Christian rock bands of the day, including Petra.

Bluesy pop rock?

I would say somewhere between petra's pop and rock stuff. Although some of their songs are a little on the silly side (satire).

All the way up to Light Manuevers which is probably their rockiest (is that a word?) album. Swimming In A Human Ocean tends to lean more towards the Caught In The Act Of Loving Him.

Jungle music... Can God really use it?

(Song was based on a book that argued against Christian Rock music)..
S: Dr. Livingston I presume!
L: Why Stanly O' chap, did you bring those rock and roll tapes that I requested?
S: Yes I did Doctor, I brought some Resurrection Band.
L: Capitol! I was Awaiting Your Reply.
S: However, I lost the Daniel Amos in the river. It was a pity.
L: How Alarming.
S: But I did manage to get some DeGarmo & Key This Time Thru.
L: Splendid! This ain't Hollywood you know. You can't get any descent rock and roll out here. It's a beastly jungle. I say, how's your old colleague Barnabas?
S: Oh, you know Barnabas. Never Say Die type that. I left him in Egypt studying Petra glyphs.
L: Jolly good. Jolly good.
S: I say, do you fancy Fireworks?
L: Why they're strictly forbidden. It Shatters the Darkness. One shot and the animals go quite crackers. The rockets red glare and all that.
S: Steady on. Steady on old boy. I think what you need is a little bit of Sweet Comfort.
L: Bless you Stanley! Why, I drink it all the time. Hold on Tight. You get the glasses and I'll be Breakin? the Ice!
S: No, no, Doctor. You've got it all wrong. Oh well. Now then, I also brought you some Servant.
L: Oh what a stroke of luck! Why two of my servants ran away last week. Larry and Norman. They ran into the Shallow Water and the crocks got them. Poor blighters. Well, I suppose they're In Another Land now?
I bolded the groups and album names that I'm aware of, although I think I missed some between fireworks and sweet comfort.

Little piece of history for ya all. The popular Servant song "I'm gonna live" was written by Doug Pinnick of Kings X.

Oh, forgot to mention. According to the websit the Light Manuevers CD release was a limited edition only given to radio stations. This is the first servant album I ever heard and happens to be my favorite. It would be years later that I would have the opportunity to hear their earlier albums.

Well I hope you enjoy them. It's kinda hard to describe Servant. The stuff you grabbed is pretty much a good representation of their work. I've always liked sandy brock's voice. A book I have describes their last few albums as "new wavish". Whatever that means. I suppose they are referring to the addition of a keyboardist.

Here is a little tidbit for ya'll. Petra actually opened for Servant on their 1982 "World Of Sand Tour". According to a guy name John Thompson, Servant deserves credit for helping to perfect the "rock concert as evangelism" program invented by Petra and Resurrection Band.

For those who care, Bob Rock produced two of their albums. Although from what I hear some people don't particularly care for Bob Rock.

Unfortunately I never got to see them in concert. They broke up one album after "Light Manuevers".
