Paul Simmons

Post by lucasmcgraw » Tue Jan 30, 2007 3:15 pm

This may have already been posted, but I just found this my self. Paul Simmons is now with a band called Reverend Horton Heat. http://www.reverendhortonheat.com/ From what I can tell this is not a Christian band. I can't tell what it is. It's nothing like Petra. So my question is what's going on with Paul. This seems very bizarre to me.

You are correct. The Rev is hardly Christian. I mixed him once in Tulsa at Cains and hated every minute of it. It was 50% room sucks and 50% that music ain't my bag.

Paul has played with a couple of secular guys/bands before that. One of his pics on his Myspace page showed him playing drums in front of a "Girls Gone Wild" contest banner.

I wouldn't read too much into things. There oodles and oodles of Christians playing in secular bands. Playing in Petra was not a qualification or indication of a Godly life off stage any more than playing for seculars is a disqualification.

I don't know Paul. Have only been around him a handful of times. So, I don't know either way. Why don't you email him and ask him.

I am going to try very, very hard to stay out of this one except to say he shouldn't be defined by what he does for a living and that there's no reason God can't use him in the secular industry. He worked in the secular industry long before he was with Petra.

Nice common sence approach, Shell. I wish more people had that point of view. It really is that simple.
I don't doubt Paul's walk with God. Paul drums to put food on the table. Sometimes you gotta go where the work is. Within reason, of course.

Here's what I did...

Post by RockOn » Tue Jan 30, 2007 7:23 pm

I emailed Paul about three weeks ago at the address provided on the Reverend Horton Heat website. I haven't heard back from him yet.

I have to say that I'm initially concerned because according to his testimony (provided by Josh at Petra Rocks My World), he's had problems with drugs and alcohol in the past. I know it's got to be hard to stay clean playing in bars and such; but, I do want to give him the benefit of the doubt.

So what I told him was that I hope he's able to maintain his relationship with God and that I'd be praying for him. I also thanked him for the great memories he gave me when he was a member of Petra.

If more people email to let him know how much they care and are praying for him, maybe that will help encourage him to continue his Christian walk. Let's not judge...let's pray! Amen?

I'm not at all concerned. I'm a Christian and I'm a teacher at a secular school, even though there are enough Christian schools in the area.

I have talked to Paul several times when he was with Petra and he seems the type of guy who really knows what he's doing.

Perhaps it even sounds a little bit judgemental when some of us are concerned about if he's able to maintain a Christian walk in a secular band. I think what we need is more Christians in a secular environment to be a witness. And Paul just might be one of those.

Are we even sure this is the same Paul? Their website says nothing about him and the photo does not even look like him. I don't know his myspace site but does it say anything over there about this band?

It's the same Paul!

Check out his MySpace page. He has his history with Petra listed, and the announcement that he is playing with Rev H. H.

Quote from his page:

"OK, some new news! I am now playing drums for The Reverend Horton Heat! Great rock band from Dallas Texas. Check out Myspace.com/reverendhortonheat for tour dates, and come rock out with us! I'm a native of Nashville. There are still a few of us around. I'm the middle of 3 boys, and am blessed to have such great brothers, and family. I just finished touring with Petra for 3 years, and I must say it has been amazing. Playing drums has been my inspiration for almost 30 years now. And playing around the world with Petra has been a true blessing. I have met so many people, and heard so many stories. Thank you all! I grew up listening to hard rock, and metal, and still love it! I love all music! What an amazing gift. I try to treat people the way I would like to be treated. Not always easy, but worth the effort I think."

Some of you need to get educated before you post.

I would pray for his family. His son is a self proclaimed agnostic.

You must join his network to view. People do that to limit the spam/bots, etc.

It is PaulSimmonz with a "z" on MySpace:

Check out his pics. He has the Petra tour pics as well. So, it IS the same Paul.

That there is watcha' call Rock-a-billy, or Hillbilly Rock. There is also Hillbilly Metal. A little goes a long way. I used to tour with a bunch of these bands. We had some people open for us that were goth too. Quite odd.
