Actually I believe this might make THREE frequencies with KXOJ on them. 100.9, 100.3, and I believe 100.7 in Chelsea. Scary.
The Kross deliberately went out of their way to alienate adults, including grown men, who are a big part of the rock audience (just ask KMOD). Shot themselves in the foot, if you ask me.

They were geared for the 12-18 year old. That is who buys that emo punk crap. They had a shot. I thought for sure David knew what he was doing when he started it. Guess not.Michael wrote:Actually I believe this might make THREE frequencies with KXOJ on them. 100.9, 100.3, and I believe 100.7 in Chelsea. Scary.

There were always some know-it-all local band guys making idiots of themselves on their forum. If you didn't worship them, or if you said a cross word about the KROSS' lame playlist...it wasn't pretty.
Personally, I am dancin on the grave in my mind. When will SOMEBODY pull their head out of their butt, and make a station for Christian men? I love wemon. God knows. But holy cow, WE are the ones making serious jack. WE are the ones who have the most predictable listening and spending habbits music-wise. Come on! It ain't rocket science folks! Kids only have the money that WE give them or that they make at their minimum wage jobs. If someone built a station like this:
No stupid morons as jockies. That is done and done. Give us bullet point news, sports, weather, financial and devotionals with OUR music in the drive time, 50/50 talk and music throughout the day, same format at night as the morning, only bullet points, no yammering, and then music programs (not just rotation) at night, and the 50/50 until 6am.
Crap. Maybe I will do it. Who knows.

They were doomed when they included ska as a foundation of their playlist, is all I have to say about it.

can I butt in?
I don't understand how "Christian" radio can really work.
In secular radio they basically break it down into style categories, right?
Rock, Rap/R&B, Country. Then you might even have a few stations that break those down further.
But Michael, when you you say you don't like ska, a style that I don't get giddy about but enjoy, it really made me think.
How could you really please any one listener on a Christian format? You have to keep things so broad, other wise you don't have enough material to play. And many people don't have broad tastes.
Or at least it would seem that way to me.
Am I way off base?

Tulsa is like the prodestant vatican. There are many ministries based there, several mega churches there, etc. Tulsa and OKC used to be the little nashvilles, where Christian concerts were recorded.
Here is the deal. You have to pick a market in the niche Christian market. The parent station in this case, KXOJ, does a good job at that, targeting the soccer mom. In the old days, when there weren't as many artists and genres of Christian music, KXOJ played it ALL. EVERYTHING. At night, requests programmed the shows. So what they ended up doing was scrapping that, and going to a profitable. commercial, soccer mom mix, because that was acceptable by the masses. Hard rock was not.
There was secular station in town that allowed to guys to do a Christian show. It featured indies, and some secular stuff that could be Christian, etc. It had a cult following. A major network decided to cash in, hired seasoned talent to run a station, and let these two guys program the music. Then they were bumped out I think. I don't remember. It didn't last.
So The KROSS came and filled that gap. At first it was just a harder version of KXOJ. The did play some stuff that was great. Then they started going after skaters, pre teens and teens etc. Younger people that don't listen, don't buy. A complete failure IMO.
The problem with this move is that Christian music is 10 years behind the times. So they are trying to attract kids now, with crap that is out of style and cultish when you think about it. When is the last time a ska band was on the secular charts? It has been a LOOOOOONG time. 9 times out of 10 these bands are following the same formula for tunes, have the same tone, and it is all too late.
Every broadcaster has to hyper niche market. The US government is making it worse by mandating digital radio, shoving more hyper niche advertising and less music in our faces.
If you want to hear something that is not what the majority wants, buy an ipod. Don't expect a multimillion dollar radio station to operate 24/7 so you can have the option to turn it on and listen for 7 minutes a day.
We men have been neglected by radio for about 10 years. Clearchannel admitted it and changed in some markets. Revenue went up. I guess 10 years from now Christian radio will follow.

ska
I never said I don't like ska. All I meant was that you don't hear ska on the radio. Anywhere, as far as I know. Except for Christian rock stations. Not even that many of those! <shrug>crossways wrote:Michael, when you you say you don't like ska, a style that I don't get giddy about but enjoy, it really made me think.

Christian radio works great here in the Dallas area and no I'm not talking about KLTY. I'm talking about the listener supported 89.7 powerfm Christian Rock Radio. It is the only non spanish FM station in the market to grow in listenership in the last 7 quarters. It really works great with playing only Christian Rock you will never hear Amy Grant or Sandi Patti on this dial. They also have a retro hour on in the evenings that caters to classic Christian Rock.

Yes it is the station. They upfronted all the money for the show because of the respect Petra has earned. I believe the total tickets sold for the concert was like 2,100.
You can tell that this station is feeling the blessing's of God because they going against the grain here and they are suceeding.
