NEW USERS: Important note on signing up

Post by micah » Thu Dec 20, 2007 5:05 am

This has been the practice for a while, sorry if I didn't state it publicly. Automatic registration has been disabled for some time, as about 20 spambots try to register every day, in order to post bunnies spam and other nasties.

When someone uses the sign-up mechanism, I get an email about it, but promptly delete and forget about it. Very few new users come around here, and probably literally 999 out of 1000 signup requests are for spambots.

When someone emails me asking why they weren't activated, they get activated. I guess I was working on the assumption that truly interested people would do that after a couple days.

So, just a note, when you get the e-mail, just reply to it and tell me your favorite Petra song. Then I'll activate you ASAP. :)

If any bunnies spammers actually read this, and follow these instructions in order to post your vile junk, I will immediately delete you and take stronger action about new registrants.

I was sort of wondering what the spam bunnies spam thing was, LOL. I guess sometimes those filters work over time.

Yeah... for a while we were battling the bots by replacing potentially offensive words with potentially silly ones. :) (It's in the management settings if you want to turn it off, Micah)

It would be sweet if we could just upload avatars instead of having to find a place to host them. How much money are we talking here?

How much money for what? The domain hosting? Micah is hosting this board out of the goodness of his heart.

My guess would be that if we switched from having to link to offsite avatars to simply being able to upload them here, it would be a considerable strain on bandwidth, and therefore cost more money.

But I've been known to be wrong on occasion.

I think I can say with reasonable confidence that in the time I've been posting here Jonathan hasn't been shy about voicing his opinion at times, but at no time do I ever recall him posting anything saying he thought he was always right or that everyone was required to agree with him.

Things would be pretty boring if we all had the same opinion about different issues, and when you step back to look at the big pictures, opinions on a message board aren't all that big a deal.

Jonathan! Your Strypetra picture is great! I hadn't seen it before. Bob is the only one who looks really goofy, the others actually look pretty good. Greg would look really good if the hair was dark.

Ok, on second look - I guess John looks pretty goofy too. He could handle that much hair, but the hairstyle isn't quite right. :D

And how does one pronounce "StryPetra" anyway?
