Glad to see you got your account restored.

While I'm sort of a closet fan of the band and I appreciate what the girls stand for, this song is just lyrically horrid:

Average Girl by BarlowGirl

So what I'm not your average girl
I don't meet the standards of this world
Chasing after boys is not my thing
See I'm waiting for a wedding ring

No more dating
I'm just waiting
Like sleeping beauty
My prince will come for me
No more dating
I'm just waiting
'Cause God is writing my love story

Boys are bad; that's certainly not true
'Cause God's preparing one for you
If you get tired waiting till he comes
God's arms are the perfect place to run

Sleep - that's the only thing for me
'Cause when I sleep
God's preparing one for me

personally I like the image of "dream maker", I always say that God gave us creativity, that all dreams and goals and ideas we have are because of Him, I like that description :)

Clear!

*Zap*

We've got a pulse. The thread is coming back to life.
Enosh wrote:Everything that you do and see, one more event in your memory
Every bit takes another bite without control over wrong or right
You must screen every entry made,
the consequences must be weighed
The only way to security is every thought in captivity

(Chorus)
Computer brains, put garbage in
Computer brains, get garbage out
Computer brains, programming you
Computer brains, what can you do?
Break out

Are you a user or being used, has your memory been abused?
Take random samples from your mind and analyze what you may find

You can clear all your memory and be transformed when you find the key
Think on the things that will bring you peace,
confusing data soon will cease

Now hold on there a minute!! It was the 80's. Computers were just coming into the hands of the average person. Oh how fondly I remember my old Commodore computers. I had the Vic 20, and then the Commodore 128.

In 1985 ... I loved this song. The song is a little dated today, but in 1985 it seemed profound.

BTW, it's "byte", not "bite".

Of course I'm sure you're aware of the old programmer's addage "garbage in, garbage out"? It's what we tell users who give us crummy data and then try to blame our code because they don't get the results they want.
gman wrote:"I agree we ought to boycott hell, but we ought to boycott dumb lyrics as well."
Oh now come on! "Boycott Hell" is a great song! Maybe you had to grow up around coal miners and wildcat strikes to really appreciate this song. (Oh the memories ... the State Police transferring troopers in from all over the state just to deal with the chaos ... good times ... good times.)
Enosh wrote:Get Back to the Bible
I don't know what I've been told
Joe Smith has seen Moroni
It's getting so a man can't tell
Who's real and who's a phony

Hare Krishna" may be fun to sing
But it ain't gonna get you to heaven
The only one who's gonna get you there
His number is a perfect seven

Satan worship may be cool and hip (Really?)
But when are you gonna learn?
There's a place that's set for you and him
Man, you know you're gonna burn

Gonna Fly Away
Dreamin' about flyin' since I was a boy
Never thought I'd see the real mccoy
I think it's safe to say
I finally found a way

Gonna fly away
Gonna fly away

Every day I've been looking in the sky
Hope it's not raining when I start to fly
I bet you think I'm strange
Wait until I'm changed
Um ... yeah. Okay. Hard to argue with you there.

Sorry Bob, if you're reading this but ... not exactly your best work.

Of course, the dumbest lyrics of any Petra song still have to be from "Friends, All In The Family Of God". And the tune didn't help. Like fingernails on a blackboard. That song ranks right up there with Barney's "I Love You, You Love Me". Both songs are banned from my house and car.
yamasaaaki har har wrote:"Yes Lord, yes Lord, yes yes Lord
Yes Lord, yes Lord, yes yes Lord
Yes Lord, yes Lord, yes yes Lord, amen"
I think the problem is in how many times those lyrics are repeated. I think they'd be okay one time through. By the 5th time through you're starting to get sick of it.

I kind of like "If I Had To Die For Someone", though I admit the first half of the first verse could have perhaps used a little more work.

There's a definite arc to Bob's lyrics from the beginning to when Petra was really rolling, and he even touches on it in the More Power To Ya Devotional, they are simplistic and reflect the brand new faith he (and maybe the rest of the guys) had at the time. I don't know what he wrote before that, if he did...who knows.

My son found it today.... It's SO BAD I can't stop laughing!!! I'll guarantee you'll play it more than once - just for the hilarious factor.

Scope out these lyrics:

Once I tried to run,
I tried to run and hide,
But Jesus came and found me,
And he touched me down inside,
He is like a mountie,
He always gets his man,
And he'll zap you any way he can,
Zap!

http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1829614

And then I got to thinking - Phillips Craig Dean has a song that is JUST as lame, namely - Friend of God.

Who am I that You are mindful of me?
That you hear me
When I call
Is it true that You are thinking of me?
How You love me
It's amazing
(Repeat)

~Chorus~
I am a friend of God
I am a friend of God
I am a friend of God
He calls me friend

Who am I that You are mindful of me?
That you hear me
When I call, yeah
Is it true that You are thinking of me?
How You love me
It's amazing, so amazing, it's amazing

~Chorus~

God Almighty
Lord of Glory
You have called me friend

I'm sorry, but those lyrics are so sad it makes me cringe every time I hear it on the radio. In fact, I turn it off when the song comes on.

Someone PLEASE tell me how this song got airplay!!
I don't have a problem with these lyrics, if they fit music. Some music is busy and does not need deep lyrics.

In the case of the PC&D song, they quoted Psalms almost word for word. So, that would not be considered cheesy by most people, God and David.

The hurricane and tree song - I don't know the name of it; the one that says something like:

God is like a hurricane, I am a tree.

And then:

So Heaven meets earth like a sloppy wet kiss,
And my heart turns violently inside of my chest
and I don't have time to maintain these regrets when I think about the way

He loves us,
Whoa! how He loves us,
Whoa! how He loves us,
Oh how He loves.
Yeah, He loves us,
Whoa! how He loves us,
Whoa! how He loves us,
Whoa! how He loves.

Matthew, I had the same reaction. You're not actually that radical, Kirk. Commercial, yes.

Jan, thats "How He Loves" by David Crowder Band, and it's "overseen," not "sloppy wet." Unless you heard a different version than I.

How we receive lyrics is all very subjective. The first time I heard "How He Loves," I was driving in my car and had been letting the world get the best of me, and that song, and its chorus was exactly the salve my soul needed. Just to be reminded that not only does God love me, but "Oh! How he loves me!" Not groundbreaking, not overly creative lyrically, but incredibly deep as a concept.

I didn't have Petra on the ol' iPod at the time, so I was slumming, I know.

Yes, there is one version that says sloppy wet kiss. The hurricane and tree part bugs me. It seems like an insult to God to say that he is a violent force that arbitrarily destroys people and things in his path.

But alot of people like the song; we sing it in church pretty often and it's on the radio alot too.

As a software developer, 'Computer Brains' always brings a smile to my face. I actually think the weaving together of just about every computer term available at that time into a spiritual lesson was pretty darn creative.

Seems like I know another band that talks about being friends with God...
I can be friends with you
There's no better friend that a man can know
I can be friends with you
And I feel so special
'Cause it's you I know

I don't know the governor
Even though I'm a resident
I don't rub shoulders with the dignities
Or shake hands with the President

And I know I can be with you
And I don't have to wait in line
You're the author and creator of all the world
And a personal friend of mine

When I have a problem
I can always come to You
Regardless of the situation
I know You know what to do
You put Your arm around and speak so tenderly
And I feel better just to know You care
And you took the time for me

Greater love has no man than this
That a man lay his life down for his friend
But You laid down for all the world to see
And You proved Your love for me

I'm no special person
I've got nothing to offer You
But You treat me like I'm the only one
With whom you have to do
You're closer than a brother
And You're with me every day
I love You 'cause You first loved me
And I'm glad that I can say...
That was Steve Taylor who skewered D&K in the Newsboys song, and as big a fan as I am of Taylor and his m.o., taking direct hits like that at another Christian band seemed over the line to me.

I'm fairly certain that was done in jest, especially since the liner notes say "With apologies to DeGarmo and Key".

I've heard very little D&K, but I have heard "Boycott Hell" a few times - at first it sounded a bit childish, but grew on me. Now I kinda like it. Personally, I didn't have trouble with the "fudged" rhymes and meter; that usually doesn't bother me.

This is my top bad lyrics song, courtesy of Jars of Clay:
Rain, rain on my face
It hasn't stopped raining for days
My world is a flood
Slowly I become one with the mud

Chorus:
But if I can't swim after forty days
And my mind is crushed by the thrashing waves
Lift me up so high that I cannot fall
Lift me up
Lift me up - when I'm falling
Lift me up - I'm weak and I'm dying
Lift me up - I need you to hold me
Lift me up - Keep me from drowning again
To be fair, as the song progresses there's a little (and I mean a *little*) more meat on the bones ("Cast down all the waves of sin and guilt that overthrows me" is a nice line), but overall it just has an really impotent message - I am told be some that it is loosely modeled after a paraphrased Bible "translation"'s version of a Psalm (as if the Psalms are so intellectual they need need to be watered down). And please, just how high do you need to be lifted before you "cannot fall"? I mean, isn't it safe to say that the higher you are the farther you fall? Reminds me of Buzz Lightyear's famous line "To infinity... AND BEYOND!!!"

I should say that I have no trouble with some healthy lyrical "dissonance" - it can really make a lyric really powerful; eg. "we can live dying every day". But even in that example, the dissonance is ultimately resolved (in this case, through one of Bob's pervasive Biblical references). In the Jars' line, however, I'm not aware of any idiomatic or literary usage of the concept of being so "high" a fall is no longer possible. Am I wrong there?

"Jesus and the California Kid
oh what Jesus did, for the California kid

(yay a song about the California Kid, a character that NO one knows)

What a lame chorus, but this was back when AA was still kinda sorta trying to be a hip hop rock band so we then get lyrics like
"One time God became a man
and He walked upon the earth
He didn't have a cool car
and I don't think he liked to surf
But he must of had something in common
to do what He did
'Cause He died for you and I
and He died for the California Kid.

Will Mcginnis told me that they stopped playing Jesus and the California Kid by the time the Zombie Tour was taking place. He hoped to never have to play it for the rest of his life. One reason was the stupid lyrics. Oh the stupid lyrics.
