To split hairs... as soon as a work is put down in tangible form... written down, recorded on tape, etc... it is "legally copyrighted." Copyright registration is basically for proof that the work existed at a certain time and was yours. Technically, registering with the copyright office is OPTIONAL! Once you have publicly released something and you feel comfortable that you can prove in court that you created it, you are all set. In the real world, I feel pretty certain that either Bob himself or Inpop Records has submitted the paperwork to copyright the work either as individual songs (they did do it for
Revival, after all) or as one single long work. I do realize this is the government we're talking about, but I also do find it surprising that they are quite THAT slow!
