Van Halen
Van Halen
They definately aren't Christian, but they are great IMO. I saw VH last night. Imagine what they could do if they got saved.
Some people think that I am nuts, but I pray/have prayed that some of the industry's biggest/best would get saved, lead their fan bases to the Lord, and then grow the Christian market.

You know,
I wanna comment on this thread. Believe me I do. But I'm afraid that that Corrupt Christian Music website will label me some kind of horrible devil worshipper because I like Van Halen's music, even though I don't support what the band stands for. Oh no! I actually said that. NNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
Actually, i enjoy the David Lee Roth era better. Sammy is a better singer, but David is a performer. I enjoy all of it though. I wish they could of just buried the hatchet and got David back. Truth be told, Gary Sharone is a better singer than both of them, but he didn't fit with Van Halen. Extreme yes!! Got to love Extreme!
Well, I went and did it now. Admitted that I like a secular band.

A heathen? Oh no! I've never been a heathen before. I've always been a good guy who loves God. I don't know if I can do this.
Yeah, you either get it that Dave is Dave and that he's out there, but he's funny. Or you think he's an idiot who just can't get along with others. I admit that he probably thinks more of himself than he is, but he's funny. It's too bad that after Van Halen did the two new songs for the Best of album that they didn't continue on with Dave.
Shell, I know a certain lead singer of a band that has Zone named after it that might agree with you about mr. Perry.
That is along with my wife. Have you ever played the Journey video game? I have it on my computer. It has little video heads of the members of Jouney with cartoon bodies. You have to get your instrument back based on whatever board you're on. All the while the music from Journey plays in the background. But it's video game sounding versions of the songs. Talk about a hoot!

I agree. I didn't get to see VH with Dave, but I did see Dave the year he split. He had Steve Vai, Billy Sheehan, Greg Bisonette. That band was probably better than Van Halen right there. The most prophetic thing that Dave ever said was "Not even God can stop Van Halen." Well, he was wrong.
Sammy is under some kind of conviction. His lyrics like "you don't have to die and go to Heaven, or hang around and be born again. Just tune in to what this place has got to offer, cause we may never be hear again." Or this is my fav..."I'll bear the cross on judgement day..." The other stuff is pretty humanistic garbage. He can write lyrics for his own records, just not in the VH setting.
I tune the lyrics out. As an engineer, I am one not to really enjoy concerts. I am to the point that I cannot. I analyze the sound, the staging, the lighting. I notice missed guitar solo's by the engineer, the sequenced/taped tracks, etc. The lyrics sadden my soul, but the musical gifts that these guys have (Eddie and Alex) are just astounding. They are so freakin' tight!

Yeah,
the band Dave had was awesome. I heard that Greg Bisonette is a christian. I also heard that Sammy is cousins with Ken Tamplin. Eddie is just plain a great guitarist.
The one thing about Van Halen that I've noticed is that after Dave left, it was like all the fun left the band as well. It seems the band went from being this happy go lucky type band, to taking themselves way too seriously. Have you ever seen the interview with Eddie and Alex when their talking about Dave and the MTV appearance they made in the mid 90's? The brothers seem like they couldn't handle Dave's sense of humor. Which to me at that point (If you're not in a christian band and singing for God) don't let Dave's dancing around "acting like Dave" get you so worked up. Just think of all the money you could make if you reunite, and let Dave do his thing. That's what people liked about Van Halen back in day was Dave's "unique" persolality. It just seems that the Van Halen brothers could ever get over that.

I can see it now Mat.
David Lee Roth doing jump kicks to fend off evil doers.
You have to find the secret potion to unlock Dave's Tribal outfit.
Sammy driving an all terain vehicle while "I can't drive 55" plays in the background.
The Micheal Anthony board: Two words... Jack Daniel's
And of Course the End: Both Van Halen Brothers duke it out to see who has control of the band.
Hey Mat, Do you still have some of your games? I can't get any more because the sites down. I would love to get some from you. There so small you could email them.
Shell,
I'll try to email you that Journey game.

I also hope Dave and the guys from Van Halen could be saved. Maybe God could use that Bisonette guy if he's saved. By the grace of God it could happen for any secular rock musician. I really hope Steve Clark from Def Leppard was saved before he died in 1991. Unfortunately I have my doubts.
There's no rock music in the lake of fire - only in heaven.

I'm gonna choose Jesucristo
"Free Will" by Rush is an awesome song but the lyric "I'm gonna choose free will" confuses me.

Yeah, I used to be a secular rock addict, but I've discovered that there are SO many great Christian rock bands out there... I haven't listened to secular rock for the last year and a half (other than just happenstance or for momentary nostalgia).
I mean, WHY listen to secular rock anyway?
Sure, there's a lot of incredible talent out there in the world. But there's also a lot of incredibly talented Christians out there who need the support of Christians.
It used to be that Christian rock, except for Petra and a few other bands, was not good enough on the whole to keep a dedicated Christian rock audience listening near-exclusively to Christian rock. That just isn't the case nowadays. There's PLENTY of great, thumping hard-rock in the Christian realm if you know what to buy.
So much so that I have no interest in going back to secular music, except for the occasional blurb.

I certainly am no expert on this, and there are others here who can elaborate in more exact terms, but yes - bands do financially benefit when you buy their CDs, if not from a percentage of sales, then by their marketability which commands future recording contracts.seichu kaisho wrote:Is it true that when you buy an album you are financially supporting the band that made the album?
Basically, if a band cannot sell CDs, they won't have a contract for very long.
Same is true for concerts, etc...
Personally, I'd much rather see Christian artists and bands succeed instead of their secular counterparts.
And let's be honest about secular music - while some of it is clean and harmless, a lot of it is pure garbage - lyrically. "Put Some Sugar On Me" by Def Leppard is pure sex, according to Joe Elliot. Is this something you really want your kids listening to? I mean, it's not even appropriate for ADULTS to listen to IMHO.
I just think that as Christians, it's important to control what we expose ourselves to. There is an abundance of GREAT Christian rock music, and it makes sense for me to listen to it instead.
TV shows and movies are more difficult to control because there are fewer alternatives for Christians. But music is easy.
