I just got Petra

Post by darthpethead » Sat Nov 19, 2005 12:11 am

After months and months of trying to find the 1974 record I bought it off ebay and it is here. I love it and I think it is some of their best work. ok maybe the production quality is not the best but still. My Petra collection is almost complete.

The albums I dont have are

Unseen Power
PP2
No Doubt
Beyond Blief
Double Take(dont know if i wanna get it)
Farewell
I absolutly hate compilation cds of any kind so I am going sell the one I do have. (I dont know why)

Any thoughts on the first album

I know a lot of people have mixed feelings about double take. Personally, I prefer the way the songs were originally done, but I like the occasional listen of Double Take. It is unique, and original. I don't know of ANY band who has done something similar. Even when Metallica used a symphony the songs were not really altered. I would buy it.

I know that some compilations are a waste of $$ and honestly I don't own many. There are a couple I would get...I can't remember the name of it...It has all of their "war" songs...and it has Onward Christian Soldiers, which is not easy to find. Also War and Remeberance is a pretty cool set, but I suspect (hope) that in another year they will put together a definative box set. --- if Inpop has all the songs available to them.

BUT I can't imagine why you are scouring the net for 1974 Petra and you don't have Beyond Belief or Unseen Power!!!

:P

oh...don't get me wrong! I have the 74 Petra as well...and love it!

But I just think Beyond Belief is quintestial Petra, where as Petra '74 is a cd that I would have bought to finish my collection.

IMO Any Petra cd is WELL worth scouring the net for! LOL

I bought this album about 15 years ago for $.99 (that's cents!) out of a bargain bin at Target. I only got to listen to it a few times before my dad's record player broke, and then I was off to college, and life sort of took over and I never did get back home to retrieve it. I think my parents eventually gave it away before a move or something.

It's an interesting album, to say the least. I think most Petheads like it more for it's historic value than its muscianship (which is good, but not as polished as their later albums).

I am I believe one of maybe three people in the world who absolutely adores that album. It has all the beloved earmarks of a classic roots recording for me.

But dude you've really got to get Beyond Belief.

I had a lot of them on cassette but about six or seven years ago I decided to try to get all of them, and I'm glad I did. I have all the album releases on CD. For the sake of the collection I have the Petra En Albanza, but I believe there is another Spanish one I don't have yet, and again, for the sake of the collection, I also have all of the compilations, save War & Remembrance, which I routinely bid on on eBay. I have it on cassette, but not CD. Since I have all the albums I guess the compilations are something of a waste of money, but now and then I will listen to them just to mix up the order some. I love the Petra Means Rock and Petraphonics compilations the best.

I really like the album also. In my mind it's not their highest quality work, but some really great songs to jam too on that album. In these parts for some reason most petheads call this album 1974.

Probably because simply calling it Petra can be a little confusing, and "1974" is faster to type than "the first Petra album".

Jekyll is also available on CD. They had copies at the show (not really a brisk seller in Enid, Oklahoma! :> ) and you can get 'em online. I think I have a listing for it on The List (which is a list of all their CDs and other stuff you can get online).

(Correction: I don't currently have it displaying. I'll try and get that fixed, because I'm fairly certain I have some links to buy it somewhere.)
