Newsboys Yes or No
Its a rare occassion for anyone in CCM to come here in my neck of the woods.
Newsboys are coming to Saint John, NB on May 20 (any North Easterners, here's your notice).
I don't own an album. Should I start buying them up & go to it? Or are there live shows a pass?
Any insight would be helpful!

Yep
If you have the money to buy all their albums I would say go for it. Their first album was in 1989 i think. I've been a fan ever sense their 1991(3rd album) Boys will be Boyz.
Go to Newsboys.com for info on them. And yeah go to the concert they're awesome, and the've been on this Praise & Worship set for the past couple of years.

The Cedars are Falling!
They're playing at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa on December 28th or 29th - part of a program called ONEFest which includes Skillet, Grits, Ginny Owens, and I don't remember who else. I can't go but that's okay because I've already seen the Newsboys twice (HA!) But any of you who live in or near Cedar Falls / Waterloo might be interested.

Newsboys albums I recommend:
Hell is for wimps (90)
Boys will be boyz (91)
Going Public (94)
Take me to your leader (96)
Love liberty disco (99)
Shine - the hits (00) - compilation album
Thrive (02)
NB albums I don't recommend:
Read all about it (88 )
Not Ashamed (92) - except for tracks 2 and 3
Step up to the microphone (98 )
Adoration (03)
There's also Devotion (04) but I haven't heard the whole thing yet.

Newsboys live are great. In fact you could pass on the cds and just go enjoy them live.
Their P&W cd is pretty good from start to finish, but their other cds usually only have a few songs that I generally "get into". Find a compilation cd or a "best of", better yet download the tracks you like off of msn for .99 and make your own cd.

The NB's are coming to Cincinnati in January and I'm gonna try to go. If you're going to build your Newsboys CD collection you should start off with the new stuff first like Devotion, Shine...The Hits, Thrive etc. than go mid 90's stuff like Take Me To Your Leader, Step Up To The Microphone, Going Public etc. than on to the older stuff Read All About It, Boys Will Be Boyz, Hell Is For Wimps. Just some advice from another Newsboys fan and collector

Boyz
Newsboys are great fun live. I'd go for Shine... The Hits first of all, just to get a pretty good cross-section of what they've done over time... right now I think you can get a CD/DVD combo of it that would be interesting. I think there's a CD/DVD combo of Thrive also. I understand they've been focusing on their P&W stuff lately in concert (and since their last couple of CDs have been that, it makes sense), so maybe one or two of those would get you into them too.

Newsboys are Great live. I've seen those CD/DVD combos. They are worth it. I especially liked, from Shine The Hits Live/One Night In Pennsylvania "Truth Be Known(Everybody Gets A Shot)" and the "duelling drum solos" between Duncan Phillips and Peter Furler. My favorite moment from the DVD Thrive From The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame is when they bring out a local church choir to sing along on "It Is You"
