Fav petra songs poll #12 (Petra Praise- The Rock Cries Out)

Post by greenchili » Thu Mar 16, 2006 12:49 am

Double poll this week guys (and gals ;) ) so be sure to check em both out. This will be the last double poll (with the exception of an exception next week).

With the recent ending of Petra's music ministry I thought it'd be kind of interesting to start a series of polls on favorite songs. Starting with their first album and working to the last. I figured I'd do an album each week.

So for those interested, get out your petra CD's and start listening. Do it now!! Stop watching that Farewell DVD. Listening is NOT optional!!! :P

Voting for last weeks album "On Fire!" has completed.

Here are the results from the previous poll.

All Fired Up [6]
Hit You Were You Live [6]
Counsel Of The Holy [6]
Somebody's Gonna Praise His Name [6]
Mine Field [5]
First Love (#1 single) [3]
Defector [2]
Open Book [1]
Stand In The Gap [1]
Homeless Few [0]

The song that was on fire this week? Well there was actually 4 of them with "All Fired Up", "Hit You Were You Live", "Counsel Of The Holy", and "Somebody's Gonna Praise His Name" making first. "Mine Field" had a strong start but ran into a snag, placing 2nd. "Homeless Few" was left Home Alone with NO votes.

Next Up? "Petra Praise: The Rock Cries Out". Released in 1989.

This is Petra's 1st praise album out of a total of three. Praise music was/is not always a favorite genre of mine. Mostly because I feel it is too limited artistically/musically. But it does serve it's purpose. This album most definitely does not scream John Schlitt (literally). ;) A few notes.

1) Praise songs were suggested by youth pastors.
2) Produced by Bob Hartman and John Lawry
3) Petra took a survey of favorite p&w songs for teens from youth groups and recorded them. The keys were chosen for ease of use by youth groups, hence the sound and one of my many reasons why p&w is not my favorite genre.
4) Petra did a Spanish version of this album. I woulda included the spanish names, but some of them are too long.

Not much more to say about this one. It's not exactly one of my favorites and the songs are a bit of a mix. I like their 2nd p&w effort much better.

Seems I ran into the poll limit snag "again". So being I have no clue which way this one would go. I just started removing the songs starting from the bottom. If there is one missing you like, just name it and I will add it into the final tally. Thanks

Here is the list of songs that did not make the poll.

The King Of Glory Shall Come In
We Exalt Thee
I Will Call Upon The Lord
Friends (All In The Family Of God)
Hallowed Be Thy Name

So get to voting!

Where's The King of Glory Shall Come In ? It's one of the two Bob originals on the album, and one of the best songs.

Are you sure about that?

Greenchili,

I didn't know Josh McDowell was a part of "Focus On The Family".

Are you sure it wasn't James Dobson? He's the head of FOTF.

On the other hand, it could have been Josh McDowell, but maybe he had no affiliation with FOTF.

Where did you get your info? Just curious.

I Love the Lord gets my vote. This song just screams Petra and is a great rocking praise song. I've always liked this album, and like singing along with it. It had a real annointing on it in so many different ways.

Just a duh huh moment on my part. lol. Actually it was youth pastors who suggested Petra do a praise album. And your right it's James Dobson. I thought for sure I read that James Dobson talked them into doing the praise songs, but Bob says otherwise in his book.

As for "The King Of Glory Shall Come In". I guess that was another Duh Huh moment. I can't add it to the poll, so I'll add it to the list of songs removed and tally it up seperately.

Anyone voting for "The King Of Glory Shall Come In", please say so. Since I forgot to add it.

My vote (song not on poll listing)

Post by misterbob » Thu Mar 16, 2006 4:20 pm

Yes...I am the only one who will vote for this but it is MY favorite off of the disc.

FRIENDS (ALL IN THE FAMILY OF GOD)

As a former DJ, I used this at so many weddings (for the Bridal Party of course) it's not even funny!

Second place to I Love the Lord!

misterbob, you must truly be a dark and twisted soul whose black heart is withered with the utter vileness of your depravity.

How else can we explain such a grotesque post?

:P

This is actually the first album I heard of Petra's and I was not particularly impressed. Less impressed in hindsight knowing this is the album that started the 'contemporary praise' trend. How could a band as great as Petra be responsible for something so very very bad? It just doesn't compute.

However, I Love The Lord rocks. It will always rock. I'm not surprised it's running away with it so far. The only other song that comes close is Bob's other one, the King of Glory Shall Come In.

"Friends" is so hopelessly square it's like a bad joke we hear everyday.

But on the positive side, I love their treatment of "We Exalt Thee" and I was geeked to place my vote, but, alas...

Can't please everyone.

My vote goes to I Will Call Upon The Lord. I loved how they got the audience involved when they did this in concert. There's not a song I dislike on this CD.

Petra Praise 1 I believe wil go down as one of the landmark praise and worship records in CCM history. I remember first geting this CD, I think from my youth leader. I remember blasting King of Kings, TBBTTL, and I Will Call Upon the Lord. These were all songs my church was singing at the time and I loved hearing rock versions of them with John's great voice bellowing them out. My vote goes to Take Me In as my fave. The lyrical content is so OT, but with the NT theology too. The lyrics are so worshipful. It just reminds us what Christ did for us. Kutless recently did a very good version of this song on their Strong Tower Cd. Close seconds go to The Battle Belongs... and We Exalt Thee. I would have loved to have seen a buch of these played on the Farewell tour as part of a Praise Medley. Overall this is a great record, but it also plays host to the worst song Petra ever recorded-Friends. Sorry, but I cannot stand this song.
