American History

Okay, just to test your knowledge of your own history:

Last weekend I was at a port in the Netherlands, called Delfshaven, that has played a role in American history. Currently Delfshaven is part of the city of Rotterdam. I was at the former Raadhuis (the place where the city council would reside) and they still remember something that happened there, that would have a big influence in American history.

Anyone from the US able to tell me why Delfshaven would be important to American history? And don't you go looking in your history books!! :D

No one? Okay, one more hint. The year is 1620 and it has something to do with a ship that sailed from this port to America.

I think it's safe to comment that I doubt any American History books mention the Netherlands. If they did, someone would have mentioned it.

1620....Hmmm...Wasn't that when some English people (I think the Puritans) who were living in Holland came from Holland to America and settled in Jamestown? It's been a long time, so I may not be remembering right, but I'm pretty sure there was an English settlement in Holland during that time.

Update: Okay, I cheated...It's been so long I checked Wikipedia to refresh my memory. Jamestown was earlier. It was the Pilgrims who lived in Holland for awhile and came to the United States in 1620.
